Thanks! The mask is actually a kind of real medieval version of a gas mask - it was a leather "beak", filled with incense and strongly smelling herbs (that was aimed to protect the wearer from the "bad air", which was wrongly supposed then to be the source of the bubonic plague) worn by doctors who helped the diseased during the Black Death. Those "plague doctors" dressed just like this: [link]

Hell Yeah, it must have been quite blood-curdling, to be a victim of the plague, and in the midst of fever and hallucinations you suddenly see this dude coming out of the shadows, like a grim reaper.
