The chill inside Rin’s house was a welcome respite from the heat of the sun outside, which was currently doing its best to bake the ground and all the folk living there with its unrelenting summer heat. He and Ginny had been working in the fields most of the day, which forced them to cook alive in the giant outdoor oven for hours on end. Now inside the shelter of their family home, Rin sighed dramatically and splayed out flat on the tile floor of the kitchen, the briskness of it seeping into his bones. Ginny laughed jovially and stepped over her son, grinning.

“Up and at em’, kiddo! You have one more chore to do!” She said with a gentle nudge. Rin groaned loudly and rolled over onto his back.

“Mamaaaaa… I feel like a cookie out of the oven!” He whined. Ginny just laughed again, filling the kettle with water before putting it on the fire.

“Well, little cookie, you have until Elin’s tea is ready to cool off. Got it?” Rin nodded in response, moving his arms and legs around as if he were making a snow angel.

“And after I bring Bibi their tea I can come back inside and tinker?”

“Yes, if that’s what you want!” His mom confirmed, sitting next to him. Leaning over, she tickled his stomach lightly, causing the kit to giggle and curl up, squirming away from her. “Tell me, little cookie, what flavor are you?”

Rin sat down and thought for a moment, tail curling over his paws. He tapped his chin in thought before settling on a decision. “Honey oatmeal raisin cookie!” He chirped, wiggling his ears excitedly.

“You know, Rin, some folk don’t like oatmeal cookies.” Ginny informed him with amusement. Gasping in offense, Rin smacked his tail on the ground with a distinct thwap.

“Well, Mama, some folk are wrong!” He protested, scrunching up his nose. His mother just laughed, scooping him up in her arms to give him a great big bear hug.

“You’re very silly for a cookie, you know that?” She squeezed him a little tighter. Rin did his best not to smile, sticking out his tongue and bulging his eyes, making a strangled noise. Ginny beamed and laughed softly, loosening her grip significantly as she planted a kiss right between his eyes. “Okay, silly cookie, go get your tinkering stuff all set out while the water is boiling.”

Without a word, Rin leapt from her arms, making a break for his room, excited to lay out his next project.

————

The sound of the tea kettle shrieked throughout the house, alerting Rin that it was time to finish his chores for the day. After hastily laying out his tools, the kit ran downstairs. He made it to the kitchen just in time for Ginny to pour the water into a mug. Rin took it carefully and after putting his hood up and after exchanging a few short words with his mother, made his way to the barn.

The inside of the barn wasn’t nearly as nice and cool as the house, but the shade it provided was still nice.

Elin leaned heavily against a walking stick, prompting a concerned look from Rin. He understood that the folk had a few side effects from their cured blight, and their days always varied greatly from good to bad, but it always made him worried when they had a bad one. “Bibi?” He piped up to get their attention, causing them to jump a little.

“Oh! Good afternoon, Rin.” They smiled softly, reaching down to ruffle the fur on his head. The kit smiled, then held out the mug, still taking extra care not to spill it.

“Mama wanted me to bring you your tea!”

“Ah, thank you..! I was starting to get tired.” They took it gratefully, moving to sit in a wooden chair set up nearby. Rin debated following, but instead opted for meandering around the barn.

“Why do you drink tea even when it’s hot outside?” He asked, reaching up to inspect one of the freshly textiles hanging from a line.

“Well… I’m not really sure how much it does, but your mom says it’s supposed to help with my fatigue.”

“From your cured blight?”

“Mhm.”

“Does it taste good?” He asked after pausing for a moment.

“No.” Elin responded with amusement, prompting a little laugh from the kit.

Letting the room fall into a comfortable silence, Rin continued to roam about the room, peering into barrels and inspecting cloth on the lines. He was about to pipe up about the old world music box he was excited to take apart when something caught his eye.

A great big red quilt hung from the back wall. Each square was unique, making it look busy and overly complex. Walking over to inspect it, Rin twitched his ears with interest. Despite the fact that he’d been in here hundreds of times, he didn’t know why the quilt was on the wall of all places.

“Hey Bibi?” He asked, standing up on two legs and picking the quilt up, only to put it directly over his head, hanging over him like a giant hood. “Why’s this on the wall?”

“Well,” They sipped their tea and sat back, cracking a smile at the kit’s silliness. “That’s the Dhal family quilt. It’s been put together over many generations, it’s been here much longer than you or I have been.”

“It’s older than you and Mama!?” Rin asked, jaw dropping.

“Much older!” Elin chuckled. “Every one of the tiles represents someone in the family. They all dyed it themselves with the madder root we still grow to this day.”

Rin took the quilt off of his head, looking at it with a newfound sense of wonder. There was so many different tiles… Had there really been that many folk in his family that made dye?

“Where’s yours and Mama’s?” He asked, searching each one for some kind of indicator that would show it was theirs.

“Right there in the bottom right.”

“Where’s mine?” Rin rubbed a thumb over his parents tiles, inspecting them closer with great intrigue.

“Well… you don’t have one yet. A member of the Dhal family gets theirs sewn in when they marry someone in the family, or when they turn ten.”

“I’m only five!” Rin spun his head around to look at Elin with an anguished expression.

“I know, five more years and you’ll have yours added on!” They grinned.

“That’s so loooong!!” The kit threw his head back and whined, walking over to sit next to his parent. “Can’t I do it now or make time go fasterrr…” Elin just shook their head and chuckled lightly, ruffling his hair again.

“It’ll go by faster than you think, Rin. Enjoy every moment of it.”

[mario yahoo!!] lore time... the story was supposed to be quick, but ummm then it wasn't. and the drawing was supposed to be quick and simple and then it wasn't. (curse you, thin lines for looking so nice and clean...)
