irina wasn't the ordinary cleaning lady. in fact, she wasn't a cleaning lady at all.Βonce she had some privacy inside the target structure, she set down her cleaning gear and put on a breathing mask. she wasn't being overly cautious. the stuff she sprayed on a rag a moment later was many times more powerful than chloroform, and an unprotected person would get light-headed just from being in the same room with the rag.
needless to say, when irina clamped the rag over her target's face a few seconds later, one deep panicky breath was enough to do the job.

it's obviously self interested for me, as a mask fetishist, but i agree! i am especially amused by sleeping gas scenes in movies/TV where someone douses an area in anesthetic gas and then walks around in it without visible protection an instant after the victim goes down. apparently only surprised people have nervous systems!

Finally. A modicum of realism. It would take a mask and goggles to avoid having your own rag affect you if it was that close. Even a run of the mill noxious solvent would have exactly the same effect as it would the victim if the faces are both pressed that close to the fume source.
Β It's a funny thing in visual fiction. We want the villain's diabolic expession looming intimately close. Usually people don't stop think about cause --> effect.
