Description

The Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia stepped up to the podium and the audience of over a hundred reporters immediately and uncharacteristically fell silent. He was flanked by the director of the FBI as well as the Secretary of Homeland Security as he looked down and read a brief statement.

“Earlier this evening, at approximately 8pm local time, at least eleven men armed with automatic weapons seized control of the building. In the process they wounded one security guard. Other security guards responded to the attack but were unable to stop the perpetrators from seizing approximately three hundred hostages attending the Congressional Arts Society fund raising gala. Several Congressmen and Senators as well as other government officials and their spouses were among the hostages.

“By 8:30pm the Metropolitan Police Tactical Response Team, Mobile Headquarters, and Hostage Negotiating Team, as well as the FBI Special Tactics Team from Quantico were on scene. US Park Service and MPD police secured the immediate area. The hostage takers refused all attempts to establish communications and to negotiate.

“At approximately 9:00pm police snipers observing the building noted the emplacement of what appeared to be explosives. After consultation with the Mayor, the Speaker of the House, and the President, the decision was made by the Mayor to authorize an assault to rescue the hostages, apprehend the perpetarators, and secure the building.

“Tactical teams from MPD and the FBI moved into the building at approximately 9:15pm and by 9:45pm the building was secure. All the hostages have been safely secured with no injuries.

“What questions do you have?”

“Sir, did you arrest all the terrorists?”

“No. None of the perpetrators survived the tactical assault.”

“Sir. I have heard that one of the hostages called her daughter on her cell phone and reported that all the terrorists were dead when your men entered the building. Is that true?”

“Our invesitagition has not yet determined how the eleven gunmen were killed. We assume the investigation will confirm it was in the tactical assault.”

“Chief, what about the reports of a woman in black who was inside the building gunning down the terrorists?”

“I don’t know anything about those reports.”

“Chief, several of the hostages report that a woman in black leather shot a least several of the terrorists before the police arrived, can you confirm that?”

“I have no information on any person involved in this operation

beside the MPD and FBI tactical teams.”

“Chief, an EMT has stated that all eleven terrorists were killed by a single gunshot wound to the head, were they killed by police snipers?”

“I have no information yet on the nature of the injuries to the terrorists.”

“Chief Robinson, Senator Jones from Virginia stated ten minutes ago that he personally witnessed a policewoman dressed in black shoot the six terrorists who were guarding the hostages before a single terrorist could return fire. Will that policewoman be made available to the press?”

“Ladies and Gentlemen, the situation in the Center was very confused. The tactical units attacked the terrorists very rapidly using stun grenades, smoke, and their personal weapons. It is natural for the hostages to not understand what was happening in the confusion of the assault. It will take a detailed joint investigation by the MPD and FBI to determine all of the details of the action. When that report is complete it will be made available to you.

“For now, what I can tell you is that all 300 hostages have been rescued unharmed. All eleven terrists are dead. The building had been wired with explosives and those have been disarmed and removed. And the only person, aside from the terrorists, harmed was the security guard wounded in the initial attack. I am told he is in a local hospital, in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.”

“But Chief, what about the woman in black who ….”

“My final comment is that I would like to thank the excellent work by the MPD and FBI tactical teams which have brought this situation to a successful conclusion with a minimum loss of life. Thank you all for your patience. I am afraid we are out of time and I have nothing further to report.”

In a government limousine moving through beltway traffic toward the northern Maryland

suburbs a short dark-haired woman in black leather spoke quietly into a secure cell phone.

“There were no problems and the intelligence regarding the size and nature of the attack was exactly correct.

“Yes Sir, it was a little boring attending every significant social event at the center for the last month but it was worth it. The intelligence was excellent except regarding the date of the attack. That couldn’t be helped and “Star Sizzle” never has problems finding “friends” to escort her to any event she wants.

“No Sir. I called my date and assured him that I was in another part of the building when the attack took place and so was not among the hostages. He was happy because he did not want to explain my presence to his wife and constituents.

“Yes Sir, it went very smoothly. Eleven tangos, eleven rounds, and I used standard police ammunition so there will be no unusual forensics left at the scene.

“Thank you Sir. You have a good evening as well…. Good night Sir.”

As she hung up the phone Agent Mickey Ramirez allowed herself a small satisfied smile and took a well deserved sip from the excellent champaign that the agency had thoughtfully left for her in the limousine bar.
