Description
Something to start the new decade before the first month is over!I've actually been working on this for quite a while. The pencil base has been resting in my files since December 2018 and I've been working on it sporadically with long periods of just forgetting about it.
What we have here is one of those unnamed Anurognathids from the Tiaojishan Formation, famous for preserving some branched pycnofibers that resemble feathers more than hair-like filaments. Both forms of fibers were present on these small flying reptiles, but the branched ones have two different types (brush- and tuft-shaped) which makes you end with with an animal with three different kinds of fluffy things growing on its body. Also, pigments were preserved so we have an idea of what they looked like. I'll link the study here.
Now, Anurognathids are small pterosaurs with some species literally able to fit into your hand. I've always liked this and depicting it was something I thought would be something different from the usual things I upload. So here you have a time travelling hand (with a human attached) holding one of these small critters after having caught it in a bird net. Several of these were set up before sunset to get an idea of the nocturnal aerial inhabitants of this formation. After having taken measurements and blood samples the specimen was released and is now probably again enjoying some flying insects.

This kinda reminds me of that video on youtube where a guy was holding a Potoo and the Potoo looks like it's doing its best to do an impression of a possessed hand-puppet haha.

It's hard not to get inspired by Caprimulgiforms in general when reconstructing these guys.
Thanks!

alright, that's what I thought
Btw, pretty cool picture. I like the element of humans exploring the environment. Gives a sense of realism. Well done.

It's a nice alternative to give a sense of scale. Sometimes a regular hand silhouette is just a bit too boring.
