Description
This image started taking shape in my head from the moment I watched the sparks dance in my hand and between my fingers. I could count on the same hand the number of models I knew who were brave, and naturally endowed enough to make it work.Shot with some new, experimental techniques in creating richer, deeper tones in the sparks.
Single exposure, 100% through the lens
No photo manipulation or tampering, though the image was cropped down some from the original, as I don't own a lens with the necessary focal length.

Two initals comments...I would love to see "exploding hair" and um, could you please explain what part of the body this is hitting. Thanks! I love your work

I cant quite tell what bodyparts are in that image. You could have used knees, except you mention endowment so I should assume breasts..
Either way, this image is simply awesome. Things fire-related are pretty. This is just damned cool.

Just the first of a whole series I want to do in the more abstract, bodyscape style.
And of course, you guessed it. A wider angle shot will be posted soon.

Hm. I kinda like the anonymity of this shot. As I said, it could be knees as easily as breasts, so it gives much more focus to the actual shape and effect of the sparks and the ricochets.

Depends on the person, and what exactly is getting showered in burning metal.

This from the man who lit himself on fire within hours of arriving at burning man, and had to visit the first aid tent twice within 24 hours.
Okay, so ONE of those times was sorta my fault. . .

And if my information is correct - one of those was for frost bit in a 100 degree desert.

LOL I know! Exactly my point! I havent done anything remotely dangerous, or world threatening in far too long. The SEG (society for evil geniuses) is going to clip my card!

You still got me stumped on how to create the visual effect of Frankenstein's lightning, without actually electrocuting a model. Have a few ideas, though.
Maybe if we STARTED with a dead body. Hmmm.
Your SEG card is safe.

Tesla coils and grounding rods!
And a very well insulated model. Who is not touching the ground.

Been thinking about using tesla coils for a shoot. More worried about all that electricity around my digital camera than anything else. . . .

Kalaphi In reply to Doomsday-Dawn [2009-01-21 00:46:52 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, thats a concern. I don't know off the top of my head if the electrical field they emit would be bad for a digital camera. Or, affect the pictures they took, or any one of many other bad things. It will totally light up florescent light tubes up to 50' away, depending on the coil, though. who says magic isn't real?
Putting a model near a tesla coil comes with a lot of it's own dangers, too, but electricity is pretty manageable as long as you do your math and follow the rules.

Tesla coil, grounding rods, faraday cage around any digital equipment should protect against any EMI. I can talk to a few electrical engineers I know to verify. Its possible, but only in a background sense. Model interaction may be nearly impossible (nearly).

I was just thinking that this looks very abstract and then glanced up and saw that you had put it in that gallery How extremely appropriate! This looks like what I think mini-solar flares look like in space. This is really cool

Thanks!
I think a few of the strays nailed the lens. Probably where the flare effect comes from. Pretty cool, though

Honestly, I can't imagine a few strays NOT hitting the camera. I think that flare effect adds to the image actually. There's this wonderful depth of field to the sparks... it gives it a dimensional effect because i can easily see which ones are close to the cam and which ones aren't. It gives me the feeling that were I to take a step back, I'd realize that the sparks were all around.. that they had enveloped the world...

Might have to get the plexiglass shields out again. . . used 'em on a few sets to protect lights and camera from, eh, "stuff" flying all over.
For some of the shot concepts, mass chaos works great. We did, however, put a great deal of effort into arresting the strays and making the sparks follow a specific path. Even with techniques to encourage certain "behavior", it's ultimately still chaos and the sparks will do whatever the hell they want. No two shots are ever the same.
Wasn't planning on it, but maybe I'll post the freak chance "Exploding Hair" shot at some point. You'd probably love it
