Clarifications: The following official information about the present species dates from the publication by J. Maisey and J. Moody in 2001. Research could sometimes be subject to change. But they are solidly supported by international and national paleontologists.
First described in Brazil by Silva Santos in 1958. Araipichthys was a genus of Teleost fish from the Cretaceous period, considered among the first fossils found in the western part of the Caribbean (ancient Tethys Sea).
In the case of Araipichthys axelrodi from Venezuela, it was discovered near the Rosarito quarry, Zulia state, part of the Apon Formation, in sediments dated to the Aptian (Lower Cretaceous).
Due to their distribution, this type of fish most likely coexisted or was even hunted by other larger teleost fish such as Xiphacthinus and even by the last representatives of the genus Plisauria in the region.
