I didn't know that either until I played the Plastic Beach game on their official website. When you visit him, he is terrified of a whale watching him outside the porthole. 
He is convinced that Murdoc is paying the whale to scare him to death.

actually, I think that changes from time to time because sometimes he has no eyes, sometimes they are black because of the blood that leeked into them (I forget what that's called0 and sometimes he has eyes (like the cover of Demon Days) so I think they are retractable.....
