I think they're putting a parallel between being abnormal and being socially ostracized in a way that would affect her feeling of self-worth.
I never saw Derpy as a character with an affected feeling of self-worth, especially that pony society is very accepting of variety, as well as, just because she's not visually normal (or, the norm, or, of a typical look), does not affect her purpose in life (since cutie marks are all about a purpose that brings one meaning and happiness).
So I agree, she's not normal, but in the real world being abnormal can lead to social issues. That's why she's glad her child is visually normal.
I think her kid is trying to say that she doesn't see her mother as worse than anyone else... it's just expressed in a very naive way. But she's a child, so maybe that's why.

Not really. It's just a logical fact. Just because you're not normal, doesn't mean you're worse. Or maybe you think so?
"Normal" is just a word referring to shared common traits by the majority of specimens of the same kind. Having crossed eyes is not normal, because it's an outlier. It doesn't say anything bad about the character's personality or take away from her value.
