What if Celestia had been forced to handle all the problems herself? How would the story go then?
Here's a new comic series from Mr-Spider-The-Bug and doubleWbrothers where we will get all the answers to the question: "What if Celestia..."

I always got the impression that Celestia had fought those kinds of battles for centuries, and finally decided it would give her more time to concentrate on nation-building if she had some other ponies taking care of the straightforward easy one-on-one conflicts while she laid down long-lasting treaties, political structures, and general policies for the kind of civilization she wanted to grow.
Twilight was a last-minute substitution for Sunset, and then after Luna's return a whole lot of high-level challenges suddenly piled up and Twilight and friends were, you know, there and they did have the Elements and not an inconsiderable amount of personal power and skills and oh, why the heck not. Besides, Twilight and co. being flashy and newsworthy and mysterious and interesting while Celestia appeared to be just the same as ever and doing nothing on the surface would be a great way to distract attention...

Well, unlike the "imagination thing" spell, that we saw in the show. "what if" spell only shows variation for yours own past events. As if to show what would happen if you went left instead of right in your past. And you need alicorn magic or this. So I would say that it is 99% accurate.

I believe in the obvious: if Celestia took care of everything, there wouldn't be a show at all. The thing I hate about people pointing out easy solutions to conflicts in media is that the easy way out makes for very boring storytelling. Do they want practicality or a good story? You're not going to get both in many cases.
