Description
The Java sparrow (Lonchura oryzivora), also known as Java finch, Java rice sparrow or Java rice bird, is a small passerine bird .[2] This estrildid finch is a resident breeding bird in Java , Bali and Bawean in Indonesia . It is a popular cage bird , and has been introduced in a large number of other countries. Some taxonomists place this and the Timor sparrow in their own genus Padda. The Java sparrow is about 15–17 cm in length from the beak to its tip of tail feathers. The adult is unmistakable, with its grey upperparts and breast, pink belly, white-cheeked black head, red eye-ring, pink feet and thick red bill .
Both sexes are similar. Immature birds have brown upperparts and pale brown underparts, and a plain head. Very young birds have a black beak with a pink base.
The call is a chip, and the song is a rapid series of call notes chipchipchipchipchipchip.
Molecular phylogeny indicates that this species may have originated in India and dispersed to Africa and Pacific Ocean habitats from there.[3]

awww, very nice pic! I used to have a pair of them as a kid, and I dunno if they were influenced by hearing the radio I'd play on my desk, but they'd start singing. the chipchipchip in a low tone is like a prelude, then it becomes a rising tweeedeeTWEEEteee which they might repeat twice in a row. adorable birds...but they really, really didn't like being held for claw trimming
one of them learned to bite the crap out of me right on the fleshy part between my thumb and forefinger. I learned to counter that when I had a slice of apple on my desk, so when he was rearing to bite me, I'd bring the slice of apple up, and he'd bite down on it, and instantly calmed down with a "hmmm" look in his eyes, so cute! ^^ later I used a small pouch that neatly fit over their heads like a falcon's hood to calm them. thanks for a beautiful photo bringing back some fond memories
edit: I found and posted my crudely mouse-drawn pic of my pet birds, Birdie and Chirpie , and their modified form as Bird Bellhops ^^
