Description
Tis Sunday—time for the Shadow!
Remember how I said last week that I had done a piece that made the other look like a warm up? This one is it.
I’m really satisfied with how this one came out, even though it started off as me just gleeking about and making sure I did a picture of the Shadow on 8/18/18—hey, it was three eights again, I figured I might as well.
Did the whole thing using that one painterly brush I like, right down to the initial blocking sketch—done right, it gives a sort of pencil feeling, which I love. And then just fussing with values and brush opacity, softly blending in the skin while making the lighting on the clothes and hair a little harsher…making the lineart more sharp and dramatic…and finally becoming at least somewhat happy with how I portrayed the Shadow. This is the second or third time I had done the Shadow where you could see his face instead of the graphic Kingdom Hearts’ heartless look, and I’m very happy with how it turned out—enough that I plan on doing it again soon.
And adding the red because the red helps to make it nice and dramatic—and broke that one big rule about not shading color with black and white, oops. But I still like how it turned out, and I think it works—goes to show you that what Bill Watterson said once is true: you have to know the rules pretty well to break every single one (or at least, bend them a little
).
Is that it? That’s it. Remember, the weed of crime bears bitter fruit! Crime does not pay!
The Shadow knows!
