Description Back to Nahluen stuff and cel shading, yay!

The Urix (pronounced YUH-ricks) is the big ugly brown creature in the middle. Urixes are considered by the Nahluen in a simmilar manner as basilisks and dragons to the Europeans in the Middle ages - They are nasty pests, and vicious opponents when confronted.

"Urix" refers to any one of multiple species of boar-like herbivorous topjaws, all larger than the average Nahluen and with the front pair of limbs modified into limbs for grasping or fighting. The ferocious looking rows of teeth in the back are more peg-like, and are used to grind plant matter. The tusks in the front are utilized for digging up tubers and tearing off bark. The long front limbs allow the Urix to reach younger branches and fruit in trees, and the claws are utilized for digging and defense. Urixes can demolish small forests and grazing area quickly, and can adapt to new terrain with ease.

In order to digest plant matter efficiently, Urixes host an army of cellulose-digesting bacteria along the length of their gastrointestinal tract. These bacteria are toxic when consumed by other organisms, and will poison the meat if the GI tract is punctured during butchering. These bacteria also make the feces, urine, and saliva of their host organism very poisonous. The bacteria present in the saliva give the Urix a toxic bite similar to that of a Komodo dragon.

Nahluen veiw the Urix as an unwelcome omen, and will seek to kill a Urix in their territory as soon as possible. Urix hunts are dangerous but prestigious events, with a very high mortality rate for the participants. The hunters usually seek to kill the Urix with out releasing the toxins from the GI tract so as to preserve the meat. While attacking the beast's soft underbelly would kill it, it would also dump the intestine's contents on and poison the attacker, as well as spoil the meat. Most hunts attempt to go for the trachea (which is only near the skin at the back of the head under the leathery plates, and otherwise runs under the tough neck vertebrae) or the jugular or carotid blood vessels (which only run under the vertebrae).

Urix bones, especially the skull, are viewed as powerful talismans by Nahluen Shamans. Typical functions include scaring away evil spirits and curing poison (as the Urix is perceived to be immune to its own poison).
