Here is my entry for the second round of theNekk‘s PSSSS contest (the link to the journal : thenekk.deviantart.com/journal… ).
The goal was to redesign Sailor Moon so she would be consistent with my previous senshi duo (draconine.deviantart.com/art/C… .

I’ve did some digging into the moon goddesses of Greek and Roman mythologies (I used them to create the characters of Sailor Saturn and Sailor Pandora) I have discovered that the Roman goddess “Luna” is equated to three different Greek goddesses: Selene, Hekate and Artemis. Each of them represents a different realm and is connected to different moon phases, also carries different weapon. So Selene represents the heavenly element, is connected to full moon and carries a torch (is often portrayed in an oxen cart, but I decided not to draw it), Artemis represents the earthly element, is connected to waxing moon and carries a bow and Hekate represents the underworld element, is connected to new moon and carries a trumpet. I decided to include this triple split into my character. When designing her outfit I also used description of the three goddesses – the ideal of veil, sandals or horns (skipped the oxen though). This is Sailor Moon aka Yoruno Tsukuyumi (could be translated into ‘the Nightly God of the Moon’)

Some background:

In the Old Solar Kingdom she was the Queen of the Solar Kingdom. Her rule was mainly peaceful and she seldom used her senshi powers. As a queen, she carried the Lunar Torch with the Moon Cristal floating in its light, serving as her scepter. She also wore a crown.

When people of Earth became a civilization, they started to rebel against the rule of the Moon. All other planets had their own rulers, only Earth didn’t have one. In Queen’s opinion the Earthians weren’t ready yet to become a separate principality. The people of Earth started an uprising, led by young and vicious Aktaion. During one of the battles with the senshi that followed, the younger Princess Saturn got caught.

After returning to Saturn, Dark Sailor Saturn started the final battle, using dark powers given to her by Aktaion. The senshi were defeated one after another and when Sailor Saturn finally came back to her senses it was only Sailor Moon who was left alive but heavily wounded. Sailor Saturn gave her life to close the box and the Queen was alone. She decided to use the rest of her powers to enable the senshi to be reborn on Earth after 2000 years.

After her death the dark times came. The Kingdom of Earth didn’t last long, as the interior disputes split the habitants and since that moment there were always wars somewhere on Earth. As there were no more senshi to protect the Solar System, soon evil alien forces started to invade its planets, slaughtering their habitants. The survivors fled to Earth, still protected by the power of the Moon and in the end it was the only planet still habitable.

Sailor Moon/Yoruno Tsukuyumi:

The Queen of the Solar Kingdom was born again on Earth, in Tokyo, Japan. She learned about her past in her early childhood. During a school trip the bus she was in had an accident and caught fire. Scared and suffocating seven-year-old Yumi-chan was crying and calling for help. She didn’t expect that it would come from the hands of her dead mother from her previous life. The old Queen appeared as a ghost and explained to Tsukuyumi how to transform into Sailor Moon. The girl used her senshi powers and escaped from the danger. She was the only survivor of the accident. However, about 50% of her body was burned and she spent months in hospital, recovering and undergoing operations.

Now her scars are barely visible, but she is still ashamed of her looks. Because of that she is very sensitive and shy and doesn’t like to speak to people, especially boys. She got permission to wear her winter school uniform the whole year, she always has opaque tights and never goes to swimming pool.

When she transforms into Sailor Moon, her scars disappear, so she prefers to stay in her senshi form. It took a lot of time until she decided to show her fellow senshi her civilian form. They accepted her appearance and she was able to slowly become more open person and even made some friends at school.

Yumi likes reading books and drawing. She detests crowded places (she didn’t go to the beach since she was 6). She doesn’t go to the same school as other girls. Her best friend is Sailor Venus, who with her cheerful attitude can always make Tsukuyumi smile.

Senshi powers:

Sailor Moon’s powers depend on the phases of the moon. When there is the new moon, she can use her Avenging Horn to call the deceased from the underworld. The majority of time (until fullmoon) she uses her Moon Ray Bow that can shoot rays of moonlight. During fullmoon she is the most powerful – she can use the Lunar Torch which can gather the powers of all the other senshi and transform it into a single, very powerful attack (she hold it on the main drawing).

Her attacks are: Call of the Dead (when she’s using the horn), Moonlight Ray (when she uses the bow) and Solar Flare (when she uses the torch)

Senshi outfit:

Her sailor fuku has reverse colors – the collar, ribbons and ruffles are white, while the dress and the leggings are navy blue. Although her scars are not visible after transformation, her fuku still has long sleeves and legs. She doesn’t have gloves and wears sandals. She has a transparent veil and two inlaid horns as hair accessories . She wears a tiara of little golden moons that goes around her head.

Her transformation brooch is a crescent moon; she wears in the middle of her ribbon.
