Sebastian’s lungs were invaded by smoke the moment he emerged on the other side of the flaming portal, sending him into a coughing fit. When he finally managed to catch his breath, he took a look around. They were now standing in some sort of basin – a dried up lake perhaps. Everything was coated in ash and scorch marks. Around the rim of the basin were odd pillars that, after several moments of staring, Sebastian realized were the shattered, blackened remains of petrified trees, every one of them blown over at a sharp angle. Above them, the sky burned with colors of flames.

“This is somehow both not what I expected and exactly what I expected,” Sebastian commented.

In the distance, the tokota could see a dark towering structure. Being the only real point of interest, he decided it best to make his way over to it; however, before he could take even one step, he was stopped by a pitiful wail. Several more wails joined in chorus and he soon caught sight of several figures heading his way. They appeared to be canine, but they were so emaciated it was hard to tell exactly what kind. All of them had ash tangled in their fur and their jaws were coated with foamy saliva. Whatever they were, something was clearly very wrong with them.

Button shivered in fear, dissolving into smoke in an attempt to hide. The sight of Button's fear filled Sebastian with a sense of protectiveness. He lowered himself and began to stalk through the ash coated basin, his light gray and white coat a boon in this landscape as he made his way towards the animals. The tokota lunged forward to attack, sinking his teeth into the back of one of the animals’ necks. Without warning, he felt Meelanik’s hunger welling up inside of him. It had been quite a while since it had taken hold of him like this. In a crazed frenzy, Sebastian tore through the rest of the animals, crunching bones and tearing flesh with reckless abandon. In what felt like moments, the emaciated coyotes had been reduced to a few scraps of flesh and bone strewn across the ash.

Button pressed its face against the glass pane of the lantern to gaze forlornly at Sebastian, its eyes filled with a mixture of fear and concern. The tokota turned away in embarrassment and continued on through the desolate wasteland.
