This is G19.

He is one of many multi-purpose personnel aides. He came off the assembly line with a latent defect, subtle yet critical to function.
The chief inspector noted that G19 had several loose cylinders but would function properly as long as the exterior dome plate remained attached. Considering this a minor risk, the inspector marked G19 safe for delivery. He went off to a store in a small island town.

An elderly widow purchased G19 soon thereafter. For a time, all was good, and the automaton assisted the lady with her daily tasks. Until one day, the lady and her mechanical attendant were walking to a baseball game, running a little late. The lady sent G19 to buy some tickets while she waited at the gate. He dutifully reacted, walking off when suddenly he heard a loud crack--a bat hitting a baseball. Via echo-location, his internal receptors calculated that the trajectory of the ball would endanger his beloved proprietor. He sprinted back to help but the baseball was approaching terminal velocity. Quickly, he protectively enveloped the widow and the ball smashed into his dome plate, dislocating his loose cylinders.

The lady cried out, asking him whether he was alright. His response was incoherent. He became grievously inefficient in his duties, and the old widow, unable to afford repairs on her limited retirement funds, returned G19 to the store. The superintendent, uncertain of how to proceed, placed G19 in the basement with the other broken goods for an indeterminate period of time.

He has remained there ever since, in a silent stupor, alone.
