Day no. 3 of countdown to Kong; where I draw kaiju from the Godzilla franchise to celebrate the fact that Godzilla vs. Kong is coming to theatres this month. I previously drew the monsters Gigan on the 2nd of March and Kong on the 1st. Think of it as an advent calendar in March.

This time I’ve drawn Varan: one of Toho’s most underrated, underused kaiju in their roster, appearing in only two movies; Varan The Unbelievable in 1958 and Destroy All Monsters in 1968. Well, I guess you COULD Godzilla Final Wars in 2004 but the filmmakers just reused footage from his debut film.

As I was drawing Varan I took inspiration from draco lizards and flying geckos. He uses the sail on his chin to scare off predators and to steer while he’s gliding.

If he was in the monsterverse I feel like he’d be a neutral titan, who only protects the people on his island and killing any threats that invade his territory.

Hopefully he appears in Godzilla Singularity Point. If there’s anyone who’s due for an appearance in Godzilla media, it’s Varan.

I’m not sure which kaiju to draw next, so feel free to make a request.
