Description
Aaaaaand back from reliving my adventures in the Hoenn region! Sorry for the long silence, folks!
Where to start? I loved being able to return to my favorite region, seeing everything updated to the latest graphics. It felt great seeing all the routes, NPCs, and cutscenes more defined, so to speak. Secret bases are back, and they have more utility now! Unlike in the past, now you can even find other trainers' bases as well! Then, the soundtrack! A nostalgic overload! All of the tracks were just an eargasm, from the Gym Battles, to the Team Magma/Aqua Boss themes, to the LEGENDARY THEME. I'll definitely be buying the OST once it comes out! I could keep going on about how great this is, but I'll just leave it at that. Kudos, GF! Kudos!
As far as new features go, I love the addition of the Soar and DexNav features. For the former, it allows you to fly around the region without Fly! It's great, and I hope they further improve on it in future games. For the latter, the DexNav is perfect for finding good Pokemon with HAs/Egg Moves/Perfect IVs. Really nice addition, if I do say so myself.
If I were to complain about anything, it's how they kinda made things a bit easier this time around. Granted, some of these are optional (e.g. Exp. All), but it's still a bit underwhelming imo. I think I would've preferred if more elements from Emerald were present as well (e.g. Gym Leader team changes, Groudon VS Kyogre VS Rayquaza, the Battle Frontier, etc.). Ah, and well, the way the Eon Duo was "obtained" in the game. Not going to say how they were obtained since that's spoiler-y for those who have yet to play ORAS, but... just don't expect too much. -w-;
Overall? ORAS really brought back my childhood days in Hoenn to the fullest extent, and despite a few nitpicks, I'm pleased with how the game came out. The Delta Episode at the endgame was like the cherry on top, and I hope GF continues to expand on these features/ideas in newer generations as well.
Now that aside, here's the team that brought me from the beginning to the end!

You know what I like most of all? The fact that I don't need a Event to get Deoxys!

May I say how refreshing it is to find someone else that thinks Hoenn is the best region (well, it's actually tied with Sinnoh for me, but still)? Seriously, everyone got excited about the games, but literally any time before in any other place/poll/whatever, Hoenn tends to rank as people's least favorite for some reason.
Still on my way to Mauville personally (only got the game on Wednesday). I do find it annoying how the games have been getting easier and easier, and thus, trying to challenge myself, I have sworn off Exp. Share, and am making a team solely out of Pokemon that contain "ile" in their name, or are affiliated with the letter X (in either looks or name). Thus I will be able to end my journey as "Team Exile/Team EX-ile". What we've been exiled from I'm not certain yet, but I'm sure I'll figure that out at some point along the way.
Yeah, I'm disappointed they didn't include the Frontier quite a bit, but at least they've got all those legendary captures available to do after the endgame instead. Not really a substitute, but it's something.
Cool team! Wish my self imposed rule didn't restrict Gallade, as much as I usually prefer Gardevoir, Gallade's Mega form blows its counterpart's away entirely.

Hoenn was my first region/canon Pokemon game actually, so it's only natural that I have a special attachment to it. xD
Likewise, but it is good for people who like options I suppose. I'm honestly surprised they didn't bring back the Key System from BW2. The thing was literally a difficulty selector. Also interesting team idea lol.
Definitely. It's also a pretty obvious tie-in to Hoopa's backstory with the portals/wormholes/whatever and everything, so I can't wait to see how they expand on that in the future.
Aaaand thank you, ahaha.

Mine was Red- think it was one of my first games period (the "first first" was something called "Pikachu's Nightmare", which was a hack of a Smurfs game). Didn't like Gold/Silver enough to ever fully get through them until the remakes, but I still love Hoenn and Sinnoh. I think my love for Hoenn initially sprang mostly from the regis and the method of getting them; obtuse as it was I remember writing down all those brail letters and matching them up to get the instructions, and it just felt like such a challenge and I was so invested... this was before I knew about gaming sites too, so getting Jirachi unexpectedly from a one-off barbecue my Dad wanted to go too because the kid who lived there had Colosseum was the most exciting thing ever, and I spent ages trying to up the number on space rocket launches to get the "Deoxys" on the moon even if I wasn't sure if I should believe it. The contests were fun, secret bases and battling friends in them was really cool, there were challenges like Feebas and the Battle Frontier to get through... yeah, Hoenn was awesome.
My love for Sinnoh primarily rests on the number of secrets there were lying around everywhere (Ex. Rotom, Spiritomb, Regigigas), as well as the fact that... well, it felt way more interesting than the other games. There were legends not even involved in the cool main plot like Giratina (until Platinum, that is) that had awesome dungeons entirely of their own, and it just felt like it had more stuff going on than you could really know about if you didn't take the time to look in to every nook and cranny. It was
(Also, though this has nothing to do with the game's merits, I got an action replay at some point around then, and found out that that by taking advantage of a walk through walls glitch, you could stick yourself in a more frontal viewpoint (then one you see from at precisely one spot in the game normally), and play through the game with an entirely different perspective. This was awesome to walk around with after beating the game, just to see how places looked from that perspective. It felt... I dunno, special? Secret? You get the idea.)
BW and XY failed to recapture any of the feelings stoked above for me, so while I still had fun I didn't ever really get particularly invested in them like I did Hoenn and Sinnoh. Those two have thus far kept the spot of favorite in my heart.
I didn't get even two gyms in to BW2, felt too much like the same game as BW to me, so I wouldn't know (), but sounds like something they should have kept. Pokemon is notoriously bad at keeping in things that people liked when moving to another region (ex. contests, ball stickers or whatever those were called in DP, character customization, etc.), so I guess it was to be expected.
Current team- Grovyle named Adarex (sounds like a pill for something upon reflection), a just-evolved Masquerain named Surranx, a Loudred named Remeix (pronounced Reh-my-cks), and a soon to be Mawile Egg named Mirantrix, after the Mawile I never got to use in Y because I didn't want to use them until I got the mega stone... not realizing it wouldn't be available until the endgame. (And...yeah, my naming sense is essentially "make something that sounds fitting and cool up". Even if I wasn't keeping a theme, they're always this... less than lexically sound.
)
...you know that's really obvious in retrospect, but since I didn't ever look at Hoopa's description closely before I COMPLETELY missed that. Huh. Should be interesting!
...Er, whoops, something of a diatribe up there, sorry about that!

I was kinda disappointed with the way the Eons were obtained too. Not even their backstory as legendaries was revealed, and their megas don't make much sense to me. But their my favorites, and getting to use 'em early was a blast~

Anyone remember the base things from D/P/P?
Tell me if sneaking into the bases like that is similar.

Dragonith In reply to BadgerofTime [2014-12-01 01:44:33 +0000 UTC]
It is similar in the way that the flag mechanic is back, but you can't really interact with other players in the same way. The lack of an underground tunnel system in Hoenn kinda limits this as well.

BadgerofTime In reply to Dragonith [2014-12-01 01:49:44 +0000 UTC]
Oh, so you have to find their base in the overworld or something?
That would be cool, if only my parents hadn't locked my 3ds in a safe a year and a half ago.
