"Tristan and I went over that just the other day," Jarin nodded, listening to Dave seriously. It hadn't been long since Tristan came back that Jarin was whipped right back into shape to jump again. Just as he went from hardly riding any English, he was back to hardly any western.
Dave nodded, "Good." Dave had only intended to look after his son, Chris , at this event, so having to coach Jarin through was a bit of a surprise but he did seem a lot more serious after the spell he took off. He only hoped the boy still understood the basics… "Coming into that keyhole jump, we walked it out a bit tight. You think he can manage it? His stride is long…"
Jarin nodded, "I think I can push him through it. He's done shorter-"
"No, you can't. He'll hesitate, you'll lose a stride and lose time. If you're lucky," Chris stated flatly from the stall next door, haltering Jax , brushing his shoulder off.
Dave gave Chris a hard look. He wondered how long until he had to disagree about something. He held his sigh in, "Jackson, you say you've gotten similar turns out of him?"
Jarin gave a humble nod, "Y-yea…"
"Then I trust your judgement."
Chris scoffed, "Seriously? You don't even know my horse. You're going to put him through a fence-"
"Chris," Dave only just held back from snapping at him but was still firm in his tone, "Mr. Jackson has put more time on this horse than you have in the past eight years. You hardly have the right to call him yours anymore."
Chris's hair raised on the back of his neck. "Wow, you're going to play that card? I don't have to ride him to know he's not going to be able to make that jump if he rides him hard into it. If you haven't even learned that, you're more of a moron than I thought," he said looking right at Jarin.
Jarin had backed up and was trying to fade from existence. This wasn't a conflict he wanted to dip his toe in. He already knew things between Dave and Chris were rocky even before he took time off from jumping. Apparently, it hadn't gotten any better. He had never seen Dave get onto him like this before. He was worried Chris was going to get into trouble.
"Christopher, do not slander the one person that's actually putting time and effort to make something of your horse." Arguing with Dave was one thing. But belittling someone like Jarin who had shown nothing but a strong will to persevere was something Dave would not tolerate his son doing.
Chris grit his teeth, turning back to Dave, "You're just as much of a moron if you can't even-"
"Honestly, Chris," Dave spoke over him in a much more commanding voice, "Why do you continue to pretend you have any interest in this horse? You won't ride it. You won't let me sell it. I'm surprised you've even let me put someone else on it. I've even bought you your silly replacements with the fraction of training this horse has. What further concern could you possibly have?" Dave put his foot down. And he put it down hard. From his friends that he talked to about Chris's behavior, they all pretty much had the same thoughts: lack of discipline.
Jarin had pinched his lips shut, leaning out the middle of those two. The tension between them was suffocating. Like when Sydney was about to lose his temper. That frightened Jarin. He had to do something. He couldn't imagine either one of them hitting the other but he wasn't going to wait and find out either! "P-please don't fight," he squeaked. He hands shook as he dared to step forward. "Chris, I w-won't-"
Chris locked on to Jarin. His eyes were turning a shade red from anger, frustration, embarrassment, who knew what else was going on behind those icy eyes? Whatever he had been about to say to Dave was spat at Jarin instead, "Go ahead. I hope he breaks every bone in your body." He meant to say it stern and cold but his voice wavered at the end.
Jax flinched, feeling his halter being jerked on and followed the boy out of the stall. He lengthened his stride to keep up as they power-walked down the aisle.
Dave scowled hard at Chris's back. What was he supposed to do? Spank him? Hardly. Raise his voice? Be rude back at him? Ignore him? He sighed heavily, glancing back at Jarin, not surprised the boy was crying. He was a soft one. "Don't let his words get to you-"
Jarin sniffed and wiped his eyes, "Dave, he sounded so sad! He looked so upset! He's never upset..." Jarin's lip quivered, giving Dave a pathetic look, pleading for him to go fix whatever was wrong with Chris.
Dave's mouth hung open for a moment. He had seen the same signs. And when he saw Chris go, he saw his hand clenched into a fist. Chris wasn't a fighter. Unless it came to fighting his feelings. Jarin was probably right. He had been too hard all at once. Damn his bleeding heart. "I will be there for your run," he excused himself and pursued his son.
Jarin tried not to let Chris's words shake him. People said a lot of things they didn't mean when they were upset. He just hoped his dad could console him. Jarin never really saw that side of Chris often. He knew him as a cool, collected rider. In fact, Jarin admired that about him. Even looked up to the teenager in some aspects.
It would all be okay.
Though, when Jarin entered the ring for his run, the sight of Dave convinced him maybe otherwise. Dave didn't look any more happy or comfortable. He had the same scowl he always had but was hardly looking at Jarin. He was somewhere lost in thought. Jarin decided then and there that he needed to make a good round. Not to impress anybody but so he didn't cause Dave anymore stress or grief than already piled on his shoulders. Every clean jump was a breath of relief for Jarin. Every premeditated stride was one less worry.
Worry...
"You think you can manage it?"
He had practiced tight turns before...
"He'll hesitate. You'll lose a stride...if you're lucky."
Hakuna always stretched out...losing a stride was a good thing...right?
"...he's not going to be able to make that jump if he rides hard into it…"
A cold chill crawled up Jarin's neck. What if he let Hakuna go in too strung out again?
"Go ahead. I hope he breaks every bone in your body."
Jarin's knees trembled, his hands tightening on the reins. He could still hear those sounds. After all the time he took off from jumping. The sound of grass ripped from the earth, the thud of Hakuna crumpling on the ground, the crack of his hooves slamming against each other, that worried snort. (from Mr. Average )
"...breaks every bone in your body…"
Jarin couldn't do it. He couldn't put Hakuna through it again. He clearly still mattered a great deal to Chris. The havoc he would cause if he wrecked this horse. Dave was already troubled. Chris was already upset. Hakuna didn't deserve anything but a rider that understood him. Not some moron.
Jarin sat back deep in the saddle, hauling on the reins to collect Hakuna up while he still could. He wanted that extra stride! He wanted it so badly! Like his life and Hakuna's life depended on it! Hakuna's head shot up, his ears and eyes forward at the floral jump. He hadn't been ready to adjust his stride so abruptly! He hit the brakes, digging his front legs deep into the ground, huffing with each step. Now he wasn't going at it with the kind of momentum he had planned on.
Dave groaned on the sideline, holding his own breath. He knew exactly what had happened. Chris had shaken him. Now with the lost momentum, Dave wasn't sure the horse was going to be able to even clear the pole. This was not a jump to be taken so lightly. His hands gripped the railing, letting just the faintest swear slip. He hated how he bitterly hoped his son was proud of what his actions caused. He hoped he could see just what that boy was putting that horse through.
He hoped one day he would understand just what he had put Dave through...

I finally get to enter this show!? :''D

THAT ASIDE
DRAMA!~
Been waiting to open this can of worms for months now >: D Just needed the perfect setting. And here we are! Hakuna is Chris's horse...but who knows him better? The boy that grew up with him but refuses to ride him anymore? Or the boy that rides him constantly over fences, competes with him, and has his general good interest in mind?
Dave, trying to take the firm, disciplinary route. He's not tolerating his son's attitude spilling over onto people that don't need to be involved in his tantrums.
Chris, why the hell won't anyone listen to him? He was trying to help.
Jarin, stuck in the middle of it and his confidence drained in fear that maybe Chris, someone he respects, is actually right? And causes indecisive actions on the course!
STAY TUNED! I have to try and haul ass and get Chris's entry done by the deadline where they will face off in the same class! >: D

Poor lad, indeed :"D he came in with the courage of an excited puppy; no fear! Aaaaaaaaand quickly stomped down into field mouse. Maybe if he just travelled on his own and spoke to no one xD (that sounds like a disaster too...)
