Kate sat down next to Dave with a fulfilled sigh. “He’s all good to go, Mr. Burton.”
“Who? Chris or that horse of his ?” Dave smiled softly.
“Well, hopefully both. He’s got plenty of time to warm up while the course goes up. Neither one of them have an excuse to come in here unprepared,” Kate nodded sharply with a smile too. She nearly used the same rag she had been using to mop off Jax across her brow. She chuckled quietly to herself and set it down in the empty seat beside her. Finally, she could relax a little.
Dave got an honest chuckle from the sharpened barb from Kate. She didn’t seem fooled by the glamour around him. But Dave wasn’t going to be charmed by her either. He saw through her plans. Get on the good side with Papa Bear so she could slip Baby Bear right out from under his arm. He thought not. “Have you been relieved of your duties, Ms. Smith?”
Kate was tidying her ponytail from the wind outside blowing a few strands where it pleased. “Mmm, yea, for now. I don’t see any point being out there. It’s not like I have any advice for him. You guys have way more experience than me. Well, in these kinds of matters, for sure. He doesn’t need a cheerleader. He knows what he’s doing,” she shrugged and smiled.
Huh. Now that had taken Dave back a notch. She wasn’t acting like some wet towel all over his son. She didn’t seem to be in it for the fame and fortunes. She wasn’t fawning over him and yet still came off as supportive. Dave couldn’t get a read on her. He didn’t like it because he didn’t know why he didn’t like it. He gave his mustache a stroke, looking into the arena of jumps, “...yes...I’m sure he does.” But did he?
“Bita a Jaxlinn, presented by Christopher Burton. Six year-old grey Swedish Warmblood, Oldenburg cross.”
Chris jogged in with Jax, posting along smoothly. Everything outward on Jax looked like he should have been jumping out of his skin; veins bulging, lathered up, nostrils flared. But his demeanor coming in was a stark contrast. He had a twinkle in his eye of bright and alert. A prep in his stride that was lively and ready to roll. He had a certain pride to his stride like he owned the air around him.
Kate nodded, leaning back in her seat, “Jax looks happy with himself already. Silly boy; he hasn’t even done the course yet.” She chuckled to herself, knowing those two would be just fine.
Dave didn’t see what Kate saw. He just saw that big grey mess of a horse huffing and puffing along like some spoiled brat that was proud of his rebellious ways. He sighed to himself, rubbing the bridge of his nose. Sometimes, he forgot the horse’s personality and his son’s personality were not the same thing.
It felt like the first time in a long time to Chris since he asked for a simple change into a canter that he got one. In practice, Jax performed like he had some sense to him. Under the spotlight is where their struggles began and have been deeply rooted since getting Jax. But today, Jax popped into a smooth canter, snorting with his strides, keeping his nose tucked in. Without a doubt, he was eyeing the jumps in the distance, his nostrils quivering at the opportunity. But damn, for once he wasn’t trying to bolt after them.
Part of Chris wished they could just stop there for the day and end on a high note. He turned his shoulders, cuing Jax to follow through his movement. Chris’s brow lowered a touch as his expectations took a step down with them. Jax flung his tail and hammered down the line for the first jump like the flailing idiot they all knew him to be.
Chris groaned under his breath, leaning into the stupid horse’s charge. He might as well make it look intentional. “You’re a moron,” he grumbled under his breath, giving him a hard squeeze on his rib. This wasn’t the time to pick a fight. All he could do was direct the chaos.
Jax snorted, blasting off the ground and sailing over the first jump like it had been twice in size. Chris was already prepared to jerk Jax’s nose around to his ass, making quick calculations to make up for his stupidity. Only one of them had to look like a deranged maniac-
Chris’s eyes slowly shifted back to where he had hoped to go, originally. One, two, three, four, and up and over the next jump. His eyes followed through to the next arch like a conductor’s sweeping motion. A harmonious response swayed underneath him in rhythm. Jax’s take off hit the mark like the cymbal crash right on cue.
Okay, so the moron clinked his brain cells around enough to spark some power. Chris wasn’t about to let his guard down on that thought. But while he had a functioning mount underneath him, he was going to make the best of it. A good day to decide to get his act together. This was the kind of potential Chris had been trying to showcase for months now.
Yes, Jax was young and arguably still inexperienced as far as “finished” horses go. Yes, he had the disposition of a needy toddler while at the same time, acting like he was the captain of the football club. And yes, he had the IQ of a spoon. But he had the potential to be much more than that. And Chris was chipping away at him. Chiseling out the stupid and polishing the bright shining future.
Jax walked out of the arena, looking like a pleased stud after he had just been serviced. He nickered sweet nothings at the next stallion that passed him by to run through the course. When there weren’t any mares around to chatter to, anything would do. Chris even let him out on a loose rein. He could feel Jax loosen up under him and rewarded the behavior. Like a good leader…
He trailed his eyes over to the crowd, a smirk on his lips. First to Kate who gave him a thumbs up. And then to Dave. The forced polite grin of Dave’s just made Chris smile more. The kind of smile that read: “Told you so.”
Dave was yet again, conflicted. He hung his head a little, letting Chris have this one. He had a rough start but a fine ride after that. One Dave was...almost proud of watching. No, he was always proud of Chris. Even when he was being a brat, he loved his son dearly. Just now, Chris had something he was proud of. And that just...Dave couldn’t be more overcome with relief and joy for the boy.
Oh no. Dave feigned a sneeze, reaching for the rag that Kate had set down, “My apologies-” he sneezed again.
“Wait, Mr.-er...mmm…” Kate tried to warn him…
Dave sniveled, pretending to blow his nose but more importantly, drying the corners of his eyes. He was just so proud of his baby boy growing up! He didn’t want him to grow up! But he looked so proud of his silly pony just then! It shredded Dave’s pathetic heart into ribbons!
Kate gave the man his moment, looking off to the side awkwardly. Should...she tell him…? That was the spit rag.

Hallo. Back to Jax. :''D
two digitals in a row? I must have had a stroke?
The magic of having a schedule to get things done in a timely manner and sticking to it. Life changing. 10/10 do recommend.
But here's the last bit of Bruksprov for the pair! Look my boys! They're both growing up! :''D Being big boys! <3 <3 Hnng <3
Chris is a little taller, got some swanky new clothes. Jax is a little greyer and maybe smarter? Maybe xD
This piece was stressful xD I'm not good at perspective. It shows but I struggled through it as best I could. I wanted to trash it so many times. Be gentle on me x''D I had planned on being much braver but I didn't give myself time to be brave so I went bold instead~
Here's mah pony and lad, enjoy~
Oh yea, I asked for some inspiration and Helsinge was good help

No, don't tell him it's the spit rag, it'll be OK.
All Jax needs is "tincture of time" as my doctor says when I limp in with a sprain. He'll mature and so will Chris. Dave and Kate just need to keep him alive till then, but look! Hope is on the horizon!
Such a fun story and beautiful painting to go with it. Both Jax and Chris look like they are having a superb time of it sailing over the jump.

Time does wonders on maturity sometimes xD I think they'll do great given the time too! They're getting there! There is a light at the end of the tunnel >:"D
Thank you so much <3 Perspective isn't my forte but I fought through it the best I could xD
