Description
I've been meaning to get back to drawing the more unique elements of the Koschei Terror Guard , an Imperial Guard regiment I made up. Since I place the sympathetic point-of-view more towards Chaos than the Imperium of Man, I designed the Koscheians to be more nefarious and villainous than my Chaos cult, The Outcastes . In addition to their ruthless, fear-mongering culture, submission to the Inquisition, and fighting style based on inflicting as much pain and agony on the enemy as possible, I wanted to give them more of a connection to the name I used for their homeworld, Koschei, which is named after Koschei the Deathless , the original Lich.Depicted here is an aptly-named Lich, a specialist psyker of the Terror Guard that specializes in manipulating the wight plague, a disease that infects corpses and raises them from death as zombie soldiers that hunt down and spread the infection to anything unfaithful to the Emperor of Mankind, especially xenos and heretics of Chaos. It should be noted that the wight plague is reverse-engineered from the zombie virus of Chaos God Nurgle, which transforms its victims into malevolent NurgleZombies . Nurgle Zombies and Imperial Wights are very similar, but hunt different prey, and are controlled by different powers.
Liches are specifically lobotomized to ensure they do not fall to mysterious diseases of Nurgle they are working with, and to ensure any wights under their control do not turn into their predecessor Chaos zombies. Wights have no fear or sense of self-preservation, rarely speak, aside form the occasional whisper to "purge" or "devour the unclean". Like Nurgle zombies, wights rarely devour their targets, and instead only try to bite them and subdue them to infect them with their plague. It is unknown if anyone, man or xenos, is immune to the plague, and the wights remain one of the most potent bioterrorist weapons available to the Koschei Terror Guard and its Inquisition. Most Liches are specifically trained by the Ordo Sepulturum , which specializes in dealing with plague zombies. Most of the time, a victim of conflicting wight and zombie plagues of the Emperor and Chaos will go into a crippling paralysis, that will steadily kill the unfortunate host of the combating viruses. Because of this, Liches have a rivalry with the Gilranth Sector's Nurgle cults, especially the Steel Maw .
So far, I'm fond of this idea, but I might try to work in more influences from myths and legends, like phylacteries. I'll be working on more and the near future, so stay tuned.
