Lead Stallion: Karma's Cowboy

Anora had been beyond curious about Karma's life as a racehorse. She hadn't ever seen a human before, which was surprising for Karma. The whole thing was amusing to Zafar, who simply sat back and listened through their conversation.

They all rest on the bank of the pond. They all lay around each other, Karma and Anora across from each other while Zafar sits a little ways away, simply observing.

"Did you ever get lonely?" Anora suddenly asks. Her eyes grow distant, and she glances away from the red stallion in front of her. "Did you miss other horses?"

Karma isn't quite sure how to answer. He doesn't know if he does have an answer. "Well...there was always someone around. Humans, they were always there. I...you can't miss what you never had, I suppose."

Anora nods, her eyes warm with understanding. She sends him a gentle smile. "Well, I suppose out here you'll have plenty of opportunity to be with other horses."

Zafar clears his throat, catching their attention. He gestures up towards the sky. The blue had paled quite a bit, the clouds wispy and scattered about. In the distance just above the tall curving trees with their wide leaves is a pale yellow, the beginnings of sunset.

"We should be headed off," Zafar finally stays. Slowly, he pulls himself up, his knees popping quietly in age.

"Wait why?" Karma asks, immediately alert. "Is something wrong?"

"What? No, relax there ya big colt." Zafar huffs.

"Oh don't be too hard on him," Anora giggles, the previous distance in her eyes replaced with amusement as she flashes a smile at the older stallion. She then looks back at Karma, saying, "Typically horses will find someplace with more cover during the night if they don't have their own territory."

"Ter...what?"

"Territory. Like..."

"It's like your very own stables," Zafar explains, jumping in for Anora. She nods, though confusion flashes across her face at "stables".

"Oh..."

Anora stands, shaking the sand from her coat and wild, curly mane. "Come on newcomer."

Slowly, Karma stands as well, though he's slower to shake the sand from his coat. His shoulder is still aching, a dull throb, easily forgettable if there's something else more important to be focused on. Which won't be all that hard with how high his anxiety is.

He's never slept outside his stall before. Not once.

"Come on," Zafar says, turning. He walks around the edge of the pond, and Anora is quick to fall into step behind him. Karma watches for a moment before reluctantly following them, bringing up the rear.

It's just now that he's noticing how quickly the temperature has dropped. He remembers that sometimes when it got cold at night, or even during the day, his humans would put this strange cloth over his body. They called it a coat.

It had kept him warm through those cold temperatures.

But here, out in the wild, he has nothing of the sort to keep him warm.

His heart twists at the thoughts, as he lifts his head to look up at the sky. The yellow had continued creeping along, swallowing the blue of the sky. Are his humans seeing the same sunset? He remembers that one of them would take him out during the late evening, and run him around the track. Just them together, the wind ripping against them as the sun would slowly set, turning the sky bright scarlet.

"Are you okay?" Anora's gentle voice asks, pulling Karma from his thoughts.

He quickly shakes his head, pulling himself back to the present. He looks over, staring into the warmth of her light brown eyes.

"Y-yeah, I'm okay..." He says quietly. "Do...you know where we're going?"

She shakes her head. "I'm not really familiar with the tropics. I've never been here, actually."

Karma nods.

A silence falls between them, not uncomfortably but not exactly comfortable either. Karma's ears are alert atop his head, pinging to every little sound from the wild around him. Quiet shuffling of the soft ground, the rustling of leaves in the strangely shaped trees, and sharp shrieks from colorful birds he'd never seen before.

This would definitely take a long time to get used to. '
