Not necessarily, but I mean, the same reaction to any comment ever? It seem rude to me really, especially since some of them could easily be starts to a conversation of sorts. It's almost as though you just don't read them. What's the point of comments if you're not gonna reply properly, you might as well disable them.

Maybe they don't have time to start a conversation with every single person who leaves a comment? Or maybe they have nothing to add to comment said- and to your comment- how are they supposed to respond to your passive aggressive "you'll only say :]" honestly I wouldn't have answered your comment at all.
If you want to leave a nice comment then do so- don't judge the person for not throwing thanks to every single person who leaves a comment. In this instance he is at least letting everyone know he saw their comment and had time to acknowledge what they said- most DD's there are no responses to comments.

I didn't JUST say that, I provided something else as well. Honestly I would have preferred the comment to be left unanswered than to have it recieve the same comment as everyone else. I've never been one to think giving the exact same response to everyone was a good thing, since to me it makes it seem like none of the comments were read or even appreciated, they simply wish it to seem that way.
If you can't provide a personalized response, I'd rather none be given at all. That's like simply giving a smile to anyone and every you ever meet. Not saying anything to them, or responding to their 'how do you do?'s Then, when someone states that all you do is smile at everyone, and then proceed to try and say something nice to you, you decide to ask them why they can't just accept a smile and get on with their life. It's no way to obtain friendships, nor make allies. It seems fake and unwarranted.

I don't know, I always took it as the artist not wanting their replies/comments to interfere with how others interpret their picture. Adding words to a thing that's supposed to speak with its silence kind of defeats the purpose.

I mean, a simple thank you, or an acknowledgement that the comment was even read is all that is necessary, the artist doesn't have to give their interpretation of the picture but if every comment you ever posted was met with ';]' everytime, within a minute of your comment being posted, wouldn't you start to wonder if you putting input in is even making a dent on anything?

Yeah, I don't really like it when artists do that, but it shows that they read it and hey if it's a smiley face, chances are they appreciated the comment. Plus sometimes, especially if they got a DD, I would imagine they're getting a lot more comments than they normally do, and if they were to respond to each one with a comment it would take all day. At least a winking smiley face shows they read your comment and appreciated it.

Or they just want you to think that. In my comment I mentioned that I didn't particularly want them to reply with that, and they did anyway. Even if they read the comment, I feel that was a rude way to respond. I've replied on DD's before, and I feel much better about them simply not replying to me rather than just getting the same generic response that everyone else does. To me it doesn't show they read it, it shows they want people to think they did.

Lol I agree. I don't bother leaving comments when it doesn't appear that the person appreciates them. But sometimes the person is bad at English and the only response they can formulate is a smiley or sometimes I've seen a heart. *shrugs*

Yeah, but I mean, in my reply I mentioned the ;] and how it bothered me, and that was still what i got back. To me that's inconsiderate really, and makes me feel like the comment wasn't even read before being responded to. And obviously from the second and third comment I received this person isn't that bad at english. Not to mention the ;] came within a minute of my reply, making me feel as though the comment wasn't even read.
