Description
Philippines - In 1974, Philippine Air Force(PAF) growing fleet of F-5A/Bs(~14) Freedom Fighter and small fleet of T-33 & RT-33(~27) Trainer Aircraft, and a handful number of the aging F-86F(~13) and F-86D(~12). The Air Force decided to replace all of the F-86s Fighter in service, and acquire the much newer & capable aircraft. In 1975, PAF Decided to acquire eleven(11) units of F-5E Tiger II, but later on decided to change it's choices of aircraft and pick the F-8H Crusader. in late 1977,Β the Philippine government purchased 35 secondhand U.S. Navy F-8Hs that were stored at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona. Twenty-five of them were refurbished by Vought and the remaining 10 were used for spare parts.
The Air Force also acquire missile such as AGM-12B Bullpup A(~30) to armed F-8H in Air Patrol and Maritime Interdiction Mission, they serve as the most advanced arsenal of the Air Force, The PAF also equipped the F-8H with it's existing stock of AIM-9B Sidewinder for it's Air to Air Capability.
in 1991, in the midst of volcanic eruption caused by the Mount Pinatubo, PAF evacuated eighteen(16) F-8H and thirteen(13) F-5A/B, evacuated in palawan, where the PAF temporarily put it's command on. After the incident, the PADZ are stalled in palawan and cavite specifically, the F-8H serve another role as a maritime interceptor, since their current base at that time are near in West Philippines.
the F-8H are also re-deployed in Clark Air Base, they now serve as the main vanguard of luzon, while the F-5s are now currently on duty in Mindanao, in 2001, PAF Deploy it's F-8H in Mactan to support troops on Mindanao in participation of Ex-Pres. Joseph Estrada All Out War Against the MNLF.
United states in 1993, provided newer but unspecific AIM-9 Sidewinder(~70) to the PAF as a gift, in replace to the loss in Pinatubo(A large number of Missile such as AGM-12 and AIM-9)
The Aircraft are manned by the 7th Tactical Fighter Squadron "Bulldogs", They we're deployed in Basa Air Base(1977~1991), Antonio Bautista Air Base(Palawan, 1991~1995), Clark Air Base(1995~2000/2002~2008) and Benito Ebuen Air Base(Cebu, 2001).
from 2002 to 2008, F-8H became the second line of the air defense of the Philippines, behind to F-16s(~24) and F-18D(~8), PAF only used the F-8H for a interdiction Mission since Chinese aircraft begun to arise at that moment, the PAF also realize the aging problem of F-8H, and decided to retire this Aircraft without a proper replacement, they are pulled out of service regardless of their uncertainty of it's operational.
they remained in reserve command until the FA-50PH enter service, they are later on displayed in museum and parks, sharing it's glorious past to the young ones.
