Description
You stand there, looking at your two lords, Chrom with a serious look on his face, Lissa seemed to barely maintain a fleeting attention to you. This was not something you relished, bothering a leader with your silly problems. You would have liked to just confide in someone else but seeing as the only person that knew you, the real you, was the subject of your issues- you were reduced to talking this through with your lords and like hell you were going to discuss with just Lissa. Your lips in a thin line, standing there in your full armor with your hands behind your back. "Frederick." Your eyes snapped to Chrom. He's grown a lot since he took over, though you can't help but think it was your fault. He had to grow up when you failed his sister. You felt you had no right to seek his counsel, not for something this frivolous. "You're being extra quiet right now. Did you have something you wanted to talk to us about?""Yes, Milord, but-" You hesitated again, rethinking this situation. You look to him, shaking your head. "But I fear that I'm just taking up your valuable time. It's not important." You watched his face fall for a moment, before his brows furrowed, glaring at you. It was a determined look you'd seen many times, mostly it hints at an irritation. This was not the same boy you used to have talks with when he fumbled.
"Frederick. Stop." You raised a brow, gritting your teeth as even Lissa whipped her head around to her brother in surprise at the harsh tone. "You've been beating yourself up for a year now. I've taken notice. The war ended, what happened couldn't be helped. We had a brilliant mind working on a plan, and everyone put in their all- including you." It was impressive how he knew what you were thinking. You eased a bit, your arms unclasping to relax slightly. You felt comforted when he was being strong like this. You had supposed it meant you did your job, correctly. "Stop pretending that you aren't important because I've had travesties in my life. My hardship doesn't take away from yours. You're my most loyal knight. I keep you close because you've always done your all to make our lives extraordinary. In all facets of our lives. Without you, I'm not sure I could have survived all the pressure set on me. I was born into a plush cage, you allowed me to not only grow, but fly. So please- stop hesitating. We'd do anything for you." You watched Lissa nod softly after a surprisingly thoughtful thousand yard's stare at her brother.
Your chest warmed slowly, a smile finding it's way onto your lips. "I'm touched, Sire." You were even more relaxed than before. "I hope to continue giving you that inner strength." You sighed, nearly happily before looking to Lissa, who was smiling to you. You were always impressed how the young woman remained chipper. "Milord, Milady... I have a problem."
"Finally!" Lissa smirked softly. "I thought you'd never admit to having an actual problem! I should record what happens today."
You find yourself chuckling softly, shaking your head. "Well Milady, this is the first time I'd had a problem I needed to bother you two with. I've had them before... Robin has been the one I've gone to with every little problem. She's helped me find who I am this last year." You couldn't notice the soft smile on your own lips as you thought about her. "The problem I can't seem to solve... The one I can't go to her about..."
You hesitated quite a bit as your smile melted into a thin line. "Robin is a close confidant. She's brilliant, kind, brave, loyal and compassionate. She's determined and I honestly can't have a higher opinion of her."
"A complete turn around from your first meeting." Chrom snapped you out of your thoughts after a lull in your speech. Looking into the man's eyes you nodded ever so slightly. "I bet you're glad I insisted on her joining now."
"Milord, I was wrong about her, I freely admit that. Yet, I still would question her motives even if I knew the strength of her character." Your eyes closed, falling back into your rigid stance. "I don't want to lose the woman. She's too important to me. That's my problem, and that's why I had to come to you with this."
"Wait, Fred." Lissa tilted her head, a brow raised in almost utter confusion. "Why would you lose her? She's been living here for a year, she helped us end the war and now she's Sumia's retainer. That's the opposite of losing her, if anything you guys should be closer than ever."
Your eyes hit the marbled ground of the opened conference room you three occupied. They sat there on cushioned chairs, both staring at you, a bit of light flooding in the room from the larger windows. Your eyes slowly trail up to them, a sigh washing over you like a peaceful wave. "I fear with the way I feel about her... I will lose my resolve and thus- her. When I'm around her, my stomach flutters, my heart beats nearly out of my chest. My palms are sweaty. I haven't felt this since I was a squire. It's happening around her in greater quantities. At first I could ignore it, but the pounding in my chest is too great. I'm unable to keep from smiling any longer."
"You're in love." Chrom spoke plainly, as Lissa's hand covered her mouth. You could tell how she felt about it, but thankfully Chrom was able to keep his composure. Perhaps this wouldn't be as bad as you thought. "Uh, Not that I blame you Frederick. I'd be pretty hypocritical to shame you for something I did myself. Not to mention what an amazing woman she actually is."
You lock eyes with Chrom. "Yes, I... I realized just after you described your feelings for Sumia."
"So what's the problem?" Lissa stood up, with her hands on her hips. "Go march to her room, right now! Knock on her door and literally sweep her off her feet! You can lift me up, she can't be much heavier. Fred! Kiss her like nobodies business!"
Lissa's instant enthusiasm was a bit infectious. Your gut rumbled in agreement with her insistence. The high she gave you vanished quickly however, your face falling. "Would that I could, Milady."
"Why can't ya?!" Her voice was loud, a judgemental tone spilling from her lips.
"Lissa!" Chrom stood up, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Sit down, he's already explained why he can't do that." You watched as Chrom settled her down, taking his own seat again.
"Lord Chrom is right, Milady." You motion with your hand with a sigh. "If I let these feelings come to light- Lady Robin will likely no longer be in my life." You watched as her face fell into sorrow. "She's young, gorgeous... Robin is perfect to me, just as she is. Even with her appetite, occasional crude mannerisms and hotheadedness. I wouldn't change a thing about her. Which means she's not only out of my league, she'd never go for such a..."
"Straight laced, strict and stubborn man who would insist on doting on her, as well as protecting her?" Chrom hit the nail on the head as you simply nodded, sighing softly.
"So I'm trying so hard to push these feelings down. I'm failing miserably at doing it. I can only imagine how bad it will be when she finds the man that she feels this way for." Your posture slumps down, bringing a hand to the bridge of your nose, punching it lightly. "I've already made my choice. I'm going to be strong. I'm going to be happy for her. At her wedding I will stand there with a proud smile even if my heart is shattering. Having Robin in my life as a friend is far better than not having her at all."
Lissa folds her arms over her chest, glaring at you as you finally look up to them both. Chrom is sitting there with a pitiful look. This was what you wanted to avoid but there was no helping it. You had to get it off your chest. Talking about it, admitting it aloud did help more than you thought it would. "Dummy!" Your eyes slid over to Lissa who was obviously cross with you. "You could have her in your life as your WIFE if you told her what you told us!"
Clearing your throat, you clench your teeth. "I suppose I could- the woman is hell bent on serving this kingdom and proving herself. She's kind to a fault, she would likely agree to marry me- But could I really be a duty to her? Feeling like this about her, could I let the woman shackle herself to me? Could I really expect her to spend her marital days waiting for her husband's duties to end? I think not, Milady. When you love someone- you let them be happy, even when it's not with you. Isn't that what you did for Don-"
"AH!" She cut you off, Chrom raising a brow at the statement. Perhaps the man didn't know her feelings for the farm-boy. "That's different... We're too different. He wouldn't like the palace..."
"You mean like a young woman with her whole life ahead of her as opposed to an older knight whose life is sworn to his lordship?" You watched as her face fall, the woman slinking back into her chair, pouting almost.
"You're not that old, Fred." Her voice was weak, you smiled sadly.
"Tell that to the others that were in the shepherds. Just because I ignore whispering doesn't mean I don't hear it." Looking between them, your eyes danced before nodding firmly. "But it all it a moot point. I'm just a knight. She deserves far more than I could give. My problem can't really be solved, just relieved now and then. Admitting how I feel did help. Perhaps some day these feelings of will fade? Thank you for the audience, my liege." You bow to both of them, before taking a ragged breath. "I will return to my duties. This was helpful, if only to remind me what I stand to loose." You turn from them making your way to the large oak door.
"Frederick." The siblings say in unison, causing you to turn to them fully with another polite bow.
"If it ever is too much for you. If you need someone to talk to, or just time off. Simply ask. Say the word, whatever in my power to grant shall be yours." Chrom was becoming more like his sister all the time, which indeed made you proud.
"I'm here, too, Fred. Any time you need it." She tried to smile though you could tell her heart was breaking for you.
"Thank you, both." Your words were curt, your face forming that shield protecting your emotions as you turn to the door. You heard Chrom inquire about the 'farm-boy' as you passed through the threshold, stifling a smile as you had given the princess an opening to talk through her feelings for Donnie. You glanced back through the closing door, seeing the siblings share a hug, before a force hits your chest with a thump. You dart your attention forward, seeing an out of breath Robin, gently cradling her forehead with a hand. Her eyes widened looking up to you. "Robin..." Your voice was soft, wondering if this coincidence was a dream.
"Oh! Sir Frederick! I'm sorry. I suppose I'm not paying close enough attention." You swore there was a blush dusting her cheeks. Gods, the woman was beautiful even when not entirely focused. The woman acting on her gut was appealing to you on so many levels.
"I'm armored, Robin, I do believe I'll live." You curse your sarcasm, spending too much time around the two in the room behind you sometimes triggered it. She however, laughed softly, the sound was nearly musical to you. It had forced a smile on your lips. One you couldn't seem to stifle even if you had tried.
"Oh, Ha ha. You're a riot, Freddy Bear." You watched as she snickered, knowing she was trying to get under your skin a bit. "Hey, I was looking for you, actually. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind training with me a bit. I could really use a big strong target that won't crumple under my sword and tome. There aren't a lot of people who fit that description anymore."
"I'd love to." You sounded a bit too eager, the words instinctively flew from your mouth with a forceful speed. Never the less, you place a hand on her shoulder. "This can wait though, right? I think Mi'lord just found out some news that he would want me to act on, for the happiness of his sister."
"Oh." You watched as she looked into your eyes, a wave of heat running through you. "So you're going to go get Donnie, huh?"
You blinked, looking to her with a raised brow. "How did you-"
"Oh come on." She waved off your question. "The 'date' with Stahl at Chrom's wedding? Any woman worth her salt would know that wasn't a real date. She was bored the entire time. She's also been trying to garden and care for animals. Whenever we go within a half a day's walk from Donnie's village, she tags along. When have you known Lissa to want exercise? It really didn't take a genius..."
You ease, looking to the woman with a bit of admiration. "And yet you're faster on the uptake than many people. Lord Chrom included." You hum for a moment. "Though it's not entirely fair as the man is ruling a country now. He is busy with work and now his wife."
"Yes, Chrom is far too busy." You watch her chuckle softly. "So... you're off to get Donnie then." Her face twisted in thought for a moment. "Do you... mind if I go?"
Thankfully you hadn't answered on reflex, this must be your nerves though. Your palms were sweaty, you knees a bit weak thinking about being able to spend all day with the woman you fell for. You gulped softly, looking into her eyes. She was so close you felt the warm radiating from her body. Your thoughts went to Lissa's suggestion. She was so very close, close enough to pick her up and kiss her as if this were a storybook. You calmed your heart down, forcing the pounding to subside in your throat. "I could never mind your company." Your words were a little more affectionate than you meant. "How else would I talk the boy into coming back with me to see Lissa? I'm not good with the poetic. You, however, are just the perfect woman to explain this delicate situation."
You watched her give you a grateful smile. "Aww. I like when you're honest." You both give a soft chuckle, before watching her nod slowly. "Alright, but if you're expecting me to convince him I really don't think he will need much convincing. The boy seemed hesitant to go back home in the first place. Besides- Lissa's a beautiful princess, isn't that what all men want?"
"Not all men." You rub the back of your neck, barely keeping eye contact with her.
"Oh?" You noticed her biting her bottom lip a bit, the act making your body pulse with a primal desire. You had to force the feelings down, as her voice thankfully broke you out of them. "Well that's good for all the many women waiting for a wonderful guy to notice them that aren't princess'." She placed a hand on your chest, going out of her way to lock eyes with you. "So... shall we go help another pair find one another? I mean we did such a good job with Sumia and Chrom after all. You're honestly one of the biggest romantic sweethearts you just don't want to admit it aloud." You felt your cheeks flush with a heat that was unmatched before in your entire life. She thought you were romantic, perhaps you were. Perhaps it was you acting out on the feelings you can't express to her, or perhaps it was your wish for others to have the one thing you could never have. "Your future wife is so lucky, Frederick. You're going to make her life a romantic adventure."
"If you say so, Robin." You felt your heart sink slightly. She was marrying you off in her mind already. "I'm less romantic and more a man with a wish to have the people I care for happy. That includes you, by the way." You offered her a soft smile as a facade to keep your real feelings locked inside.
"See? You're sweet. You basically just told me that if I get a crush on someone you'd go and basically kidnap them for me." You watched her chuckle for a bit, before looking back into your eyes, smiling. "Thank you. Frederick, you really are a sweetheart, wanting me to be happy. I'm happy where I am right now. I've found my place thanks to you. Shall we go before it get's too late though?" You nod to her, a smile present on your face after her compliments. "Good. I'm itching to do something other than escort Sumia to royal functions. And quite frankly, I love Sumia and all but you are far better company. She's still in the honeymoon mood where Chrom is all she talks about. Even if that wasn't the case, you'd still be better company." You day was shaping up to be amazing when it started off with such a distress.
