You can't just immediately change the direction of your life by just lifting some weights one day. Jess might have thought that way in the beginning, but it didn't last after she woke up feeling sore following her first real workout. She kept going back after resting for a day or two, but nothing seemed that different. It still wasn't very easy for her. She would get winded easily, her body not being used to such physical exertion, and her flabby body struggled to do even basic push-ups and sit-ups properly. There were many times when Jess wanted to call it quits, to just dismiss this as a failure and accept that she was going to continue being "The Whale".
But she kept going back to it. She kept going back to the weight room and doing whatever she could. And slowly but surely, some of the weight around her midsection started to fade away.
