How do we perceive symmetry? Is it a harmonious combination of colors or a mathematical invariant? Can we permit our eyes to see beyond the cacophony of swirling colors and see the essence through the seemingly chaotic? What do we want our students to see as we teach them the mathematics we love? Being able to answer that question makes it clear what needs to be emphasized by our questions, activities and our explanations.
