Description
Eh. I got bored. Been working on Flash lessons over the weekend, aside from cleaning and seeing Inkheart. But I noticed there weren't any riding tutorials on DA. Seriously? What's up with that? If someone knows of any, please link me.I make no claims to be an expert, so all of the self-proclaimed riding experts can hold their tongues. I barely know how to ride, and I don't ride regular horses. I ride gaited ones, which require little to no work on the part of the rider. Heck, Peruvian saddles were designed to make you sit way BACK, like a big cushioned car seat. All they lack are cupholders and an air conditioning vent in the pommel. So yes. I don't really ride. I sit and the horse walks in a overtly flashy manner. With my crippled spine, balance alone is an issue for me.
But on the other hand, I do have a bunch of fantasy characters that need to ride various large creatures. (Which was what I was looking for in the first place when I discovered DA's terrible lack thereof.) So I attempted to apply what I know about horseback riding to wolfback and tigerback. The dubious idea that big cats would ever suffer such trappings notwithstanding, I concluded that the power of the shoulders could handle human weight.
Also, the "wrong" drawings are HILARIOUS. I just searched for some drawings on DA and went to town. I mean, drawing horses in the correct positions alone is difficult enough, but to add a rider on top of it ... Yeah. Some people need help. So I drew this. Enjoy!

Cantering requires a LOT of balance and trust in your horse. For me it's like sitting slow but very bouncy trot but the horse is moving fast.

7 lessons is not nearly enough. Talk to your instructor about it (you do ride english I presume?) A good lead up to cantering is posting the trot without stirrups, it builds up thigh strength and balance needed. Maybe trotting bareback wouldnt be a bad idea.

XDDD i tend to not have my heels down as much as i should (because of some medical stuff) (and yes i am talking real life here..) so i tend to not have so good balance XDDDD oh well, i guess i would improve more and more as time goes by (jesus, i have been riding for ~7 years and i still don't sit correctly.. it's just so much to remember.......)

I'm looking to draw a large fantasy mount that could carry two riders? What would you suggest along these lines; I was looking to a horse but from this and a few riding instructions it wouldn't seem right.
And very few people even illustrate two riders on horse back so I wouldn't know where to begin.

Droemar In reply to yamisionnach [2011-03-05 00:45:42 +0000 UTC]
Well, horses are capable of carrying two people at once; it shouldn't be too difficult to Google images of how that works. But if you're looking for something larger, maybe reference rhinos or elephants?

I wanted something that was about the size of a horse but I'm flexible to what will work best.
I searched a little on google and couldn't really find an example showing how the people rested against the horse. Maybe I just didn't look long enough.

My only argument would be that people often do ride without their heels down even though they shouldn't. Or at least I tend to |D;;

You know what I love about this totorial.
You talk about riding giant kanines and felines as if someone's tried it before and tought you the technique.
Your examples are still quadruped mamals though. How would you ride something with more or less than four legs or something that isnt a mamal (a fish or bat for example)?

Droemar In reply to SheTheTDE [2010-11-19 16:57:24 +0000 UTC]
The more legs something has, the easier it would be to ride, because there would be less moments of suspension. Fewer legs, like somethign bipedal, would have larger moments of suspension, and move from side to side, like a rack.
I would treat fish the same way you see marine trainers hitch a ride on one of their dolphins, and a bat or a bird the same way you'd hanglide.

This is overall a very good tutorial, and it does explain things very well about what to do and what not to do, so I applaud you, especially since you don't ride a lot. See I don't have gaited horses. I have a Mustang, Quarter Horse and unknown breed horse, so... But the thing about the slouching that is not necessarily true. Even the most experienced horseback riders around my state relax and slouch like that. And they were trained by professionals across the world, and are among the best riders of the states. I ride like that often enough because it eases tension on my back. I am in no way an expert but I am fairly experienced at riding.
This is a useful tutorial and I thank you very much for having made it! Keep up the good work!

This is brilliant, thank you so much for making this! As a rider myself, it's simple for me to assume the correct position when I'm riding, but when I'm sitting at my desk and attempting to draw it, I'm all of a sudden lost at where to begin. My flawed human anatomy aside, this will be a HUGE help in terms of my art.

Bipedal creatures would follow a similar rule, only for their hips, not their shoulders. That's where their center of gravity is, so that's what they'd need to have balanced out.
