“What’s the date today?”
The freighter pilot looked up from his tablet towards the speaker… and felt his heart jump a little inside his chest. Standing over his table in the refueling depot was one of the most gorgeous women he’d ever seen. Or at least had ever interacted with at a distance less than ten feet. He couldn’t tell what species she was. Carovan? Munok? Vicen? Whatever she was, she was gorgeous. Wearing a form hugging, smart business dress that was tan in color.
“The… the the… oh! Yes please, I’d love to!” The freighter pilot smiled stupidly.
“... what is the date today?” She repeated.
“Oh. Sorry, miss. It’s uh… GD 04/12.”
The canine alien seemed surprised to hear that, but not in a bad way.
“Okay, getting the hang of this…” She muttered to herself.
“Sorry, ma’am?” The freighter pilot asked.
“Oh, nothing.” She waved off, patting him on the head. “Thank you for the help.”
She began to head towards the exit of the refueling depot, but the pilot jumped up from his seat. “W-wait, miss! I was wondering if maybe you’d like to get something to eat?”
“No thank you.” She responded with an uninterested tone.
“Well, then maybe y-”
Before he had time to ask another question, something suddenly pulled tight against his mouth. He let out a startled “mmph!?”, reaching up and fighting with whatever it was before he managed to tear it free. It looked like nothing more than a simple gauze bandage. The pilot spun around, but saw there was no one behind him. But by the time he turned back to the lady he’d been pursuing, she was gone…

“Jealous much?” Jaydis giggled, flicking the medallion hanging from her neck.
“He was annoying me.” A feminine voice responded in the canine alien’s mind. “Besides. I can have anyone I desire. Do not think yourself so important to me.”
“Ooh, ouch. I’m hurt.” Jaydis giggled as she walked through the twilit streets of Obelisk III. Mining and excavation machines rumbled in the distance, the dust filling the sky. If Jaydis needed to breathe, she wagered she’d be coughing right now.
“Focus. You have a duty to fulfil.”
“Yes, I remember.” Jaydis huffed. “You’re no fun to banter with. You would think after ten years something would have changed between us.”
“Ten years is a speck in my time. I have changed a great number of hands in my existence. You are just the latest.”
“Yes, well, I have no intention of letting you go anytime soon.” Jaydis spoke, gently rubbing the medallion. It was gold, a strange symbol associated with human mythology. Crafted by the humans as far back as their great uplifting, if the spirit residing within was to be believed. Or rather modified at that time…
What may have once been a solid gold artifact was now inlaid with a black, stone-like material. Sidio bone. A very important material to Jaydis.
And if everything went well here, she would have more.
Continuing her walk from the refueling depot, Jaydis soon found herself inside the spaceport itself. It was fairly busy, even at this time. Archeologists rushing to and from their great discoveries. Mining company executives coming from or going to big meetings. Obelisk III was the place to go to get rich quick. Or be ground into the dust of the planet under the rich.
“They’re meeting in Bay Five.”
“Yes, I remember…”
Jaydis fell in with the crowd. Her state of dress helped her to not stand out at the very least. She could pass as either an archeologist or a suit, the way she looked.
Soon she was passing from the commercial bays to the private ones, eyes scanning the directories as she walked.
“If you miss this…”
“I won’t. Just relax.” Jaydis cooed, massaging the medallion between her soft fingers. “Sense any Vita from the crew?”
“No more than the usual amount.”
“Then this will be effortless.”
Jaydis was soon standing outside bay five, looking at a locked door.
“Shall I proceed?” She asked.
“Yes.”
Jaydis removed the medallion from her neck, gripping it in both hands as she closed her eyes, taking a deep breath…
The shadows of the hall she was standing in seemed to elongate. The medallion began to glow with an unearthly light. Almost like visible darkness. Jaydis’s tan fur began to darken as well, the fur beginning to almost look like it was going up in smoke. The pupils of her eyes vanished, leaving blank white orbs that glared outward with a menacing gaze. Jaydis was back as she was meant to be. A spectral.
“Move silently. The less witnesses we have, the better.” The dark spirit advised.
“I’m aware, don’t worry.” Jaydis responded inwardly, stepping towards the locked door… and through it.
“- said there was twelve to this set. I’m only counting nine.”
“Three of them were found to be too damaged for proper shipment. We’re doing our best to restore them at our lab.”
“Jale’s going to want you to come with us to explain that to her.”
“Jale can come do her own work. I’m a busy man too, and she approached me for this deal.”
“Believe me when I say you do not want her coming to your front door.”
Jaydis move silently around the group that was conversing. The rather full ship bay offered plenty of cover with all the shipping crates piled up in it. That was the blessing of private cargo bays like this. They ineviably turned into one’s personal storage. But whatever valuables contained within weren’t important to her. No, what she was interested in… she could sense. Jaydis may have forgotten the pleasure the sweet scent of food could bring to someone hungry, but what she was feeling right now was pretty damn close. An intense tugging sensation in her gut, leading her towards the conversing group. More specifically, the open hard case resting on the table they were gathered around.
“I’m not sending her broken artifacts back.” One of the speakers snapped. An avian alien of some kind. “That would lose me my funding for sure.”
“And I’m not coming back with a quarter less than promised.” The other speaker, a Carcovan, grunted.
“Well… then here. I’ll send my assistant in my stead.” The avian said with a bright smile and a clack of his beak, placing an arm around a skittish young Ariet girl that had been standing nearby.
“Wha- me!? Alone? To go see Jale Motna…!?” She exclaimed, her hooves tapping nervously on the bay floor.
“It’s just a show of good faith, my dear.” The avian said in a reassuring voice. “I’m sure she’ll just keep you there as insurance until the other three are restored. Besides, I hear her accomodations for pretty young ladies like yourself are quite comfortable. Think of it as a small vacation in the lap of Tarnea luxury.”
The Ariet mused it over for a few moments before she gave out a little bleat.
“Okay… I’ll go…”
“Splendid!” The avian smiled, looking to the Carcovan and his enforcers. “I trust this will be adequate?”
The Carcovan shrugged his shoulders in response. “That’ll be up to Jale to decide.”
Jaydis knew she didn’t have much time now. If these people knew what the artifacts they had in their possession were, then chances are that the case would be Tephra lined. Would make finding it a lot harder once it was closed. Steeling herself for whatever strength she could muster… Jaydis struck.
One moment she was crouched down atop a stack of crates, and the next, she was striking the Carcovan enforcer with her foot, the kick sending him stumbling back into his two other commrades.
“A spectral!” The avian archeologist exclaimed, fumbling at his side for his weapon. But Jaydis could already tell it wasn’t a Vita sidearm. She’d let him have his fun. But she could sense that the enforcers had some Vita batteries on them, likely already loaded into weapons.
“Let’s make sure you three don’t try anything too hasty…” Jaydis hissed as she thrust her arms forward. Dark tendrils lanced out of her hands, but the dark shadow material turned into the white, papery look of mummification bandages not even half a second out of her hand. The enforcers had only a brief moment to cry out in surprise before the bandages were on them, winding about their bodies and securing them into helpless, wiggling mummies that promptly fell to the ground.
“Pathetic…” The spirit commented.
“At least they came prepared. Unlike the archeologist. Oh, speaking of which…”
Jaydis turned around, now noticing the small flashes of a plasma sidearm discharging into her. But the energy had little effect on her shadowy form, the energy fizzling out as it made contact. That might have been enough to work on an average spectral, but Jaydis was far from average. She extended her hand again, this time ismply grabbing the gun from him before tossing it into her mouth.
“Mmmm… tasty…” She smirked, licking her lips with a long, shadowy tongue.
“Y-you stay back, creature…!” The archeologist stuttered, holding his assistant in front of him. Jayis, in turn, raised a shadowy eyebrow at him.
“And what do you think that will do?” Her voice asked in its soft, raspy whisper.
“W-well…!” The archeologist started to speak… then promptly shoved his assistant forward, screaming as he ran towards the exit door. Jaydis simply rolled her eyes, then promptly cast more bandages his way, leaving a fourth helpless mummy on the floor.
With everyone that was a threat incapacitated, Jaydis turned her gaze to the last loose end.
“Well, hel-lo there…” Jaydis cooed in as sultry a voice as her current form could manage, strutting over towards the Ariet girl. She took a few stumbling steps back, holding up her clenched fists in self defense.
“Don’t… don’t hurt me…!” She stuttered, looking around for something she could use. Anything.
“Don’t you worry. I wouldn’t want to hurt something so pretty.” Jaydis assured. Her form flickered, vanished, and then was suddenly right in front of the Ariet. She opened her mouth to scream, but Jaydis clamped it shut with some bandages.
“None of that, please.” Jaydis spoke with a mischevious glint in her eyes. “Not the noises I’m looking to hear from you.”
“Mmphfff…!” The Ariet shouted, reaching up to tear the muzzle from her face. But Jaydis prevented it, more bandages shooting out to grip her wrists and pin her arms to her side.
“Don’t have any time to take with you right now… but that’s okay. I have some friends that can keep you entertained in the meantime.” Jaydis spoke as she swiped her hand through the air. The space behind the Ariet rippled and tore before a dark, shadowy portal appeared behind her. The Ariet looked over her shoulder with wide, fearful eyes, waiting to see what would happen. But she didn’t have to wait long.
A ghostly floating hand shot out of the portal, clamping itself over the Ariet’s already muzzled mouth, muffling her cries further. This was followed by more hands, all of them siezing parts of her body and beginning to tear off her clothing.
“I hope you aren’t enjoying this.” Jaydis laughed as she watched the struggle, spinning more bandages between her fingers as she watched the girl be stripped down to nothing by the hands. “Otherwise, you might be with my friends for a long time…”
“MMPHGGFF!! HMMLPHFF!!!” The Ariet screamed as the last of her clothing was torn free by the hands. Satisfied with her brief look at her nude form, Jaydis proceeded to cast out the bandages she’d prepared, mummifying her as completely as she had the others. The other four wrapped enforcers were struggling quite energetically at hearing the cries of the Ariet, more out of fear for what might happen to them, but Jaydis had no interest in them.
“If I have the time… I might drop in to see you. Might even have some fun myself with you. But until then… farewell.”
“HLLLMPHFF!!!!!”
Fully mummified, her scraps of clothing laying about her, the hands siezed the Ariet girl, lifting her up and dragging her into the portal. It, her, and the hands all vanished soon after, leaving no trace they were ever there.
“You give in to your spectral nature too willingly.” The spirit chided.
“I wouldn’t be one to talk, given how often you do the same to me.”
“... just grab the artifact.”
Jaydis giggled to herself as she strode over to the table, looking down into the case. Inside were nine different items of various shapes, but all very similar in construction. Darkened metal, sapphire gemstones… and all of them embedded with a single, black stone. Much like Jaydis’s own artifact.
“Take only one. We can’t risk trying for more and destabilizing.”
“I know, I know.”
“Do you? Because I feel the spectral in you doesn’t. And is quite eager to grab them all. And given how easily you gave in to that side of you just now…”
“You forget that self preservation is what every spectral strives for. I know that siezing too many of these could very well kill me. So I’ll take one.”
Looking over the artifacts, Jaydis eventually selected one that she felt suited her best. A little pyramid with a small speck of the black stone embedded on one side.
“It’s done.” The spirit spoke. “Let’s depart.”
“Don’t have to tell me twice.” Jaydis smirked. And in a flicker of shadow, she was gone, leaving the cargo bay and its wrapped individuals behind…

Jale was not happy. Not happy at all.
“How many were taken?” She asked the Carcovan standing in front of her, fists clenched and resting on her desk.
“Just one…” The Carcovan answered. “It happened so fast. We-”
Jale held up her hand, silencing the wolf-like alien.
“You knew what these things did. What they attracted. You were briefed as much.”
“Yes…” The Carcovan nodded, fur standing on end with fear.
“And yet you didn’t take any precautions? Didn’t spread out?”
“We… I…”
“You thought it would be safe, didn’t you? Thought being in a busy spaceport might discourage any spectrals. Well that kind of false safety is what they prey on.” Jale spat.
“I’m sorry, Miss Motna…” The Carcovan bowed.
“We’ll see.” Jale spoke plainly. “Go wait at the hole for me.”
The Carcovan paled, eyes widening.
“But-”
“You’re more than welcome to try and run.” Jale shrugged. “But I don’t deal in loose ends. Besides, I’m not exactly saying whether or not you’re going to be punished down there, am I?”
“N-no, Miss Motna…” The Carcovan breathed.
“Then go down there and face whatever you have coming to you. I’ll be along shortly.” Jale waved off. The Carcovan practically sprinted out of her office, leaving Jale to deal with her thoughts. She looked to the image she’d received this morning displayed on her system monitor.
“Sorry to take your things. Not giving them back though.” It read. And displayed was an image of a smug looking Munok, at least that’s what Jale assumed she was, having taken a selfie with her making out with a mummified Ariet girl she didn’t recognize. But Jale did recognize the artifact around her neck. And the one clutched in her free hand. Both of them were artifacts that had once been hers. Once been destined for use in a research project she’d been conducting. Spectrals could be valuable allies, after all. And she’d been wanting to learn to control them for some time. But this one… this one was getting on her nerves.
Jale leaned over to her comm system.
“Call agent Minnera back home. I have a job for her.” Jale spoke into the microphone. If there was one thing a Spectral should fear… it was a Sentinel.
About time I got this gal uploaded ey? Say hello to Jaydis, one of many 'new' Toris. Jaydis' design is meant to imitate that of a particular Hellhound, but aside from that she's a completely different beast altogether.
As a permuted Spectral she has gained quite a few additional abilities and skills, though they've come with quite a few downsides as well. You'll find out more about her in the future, but in the meantime hopefully the story here will whet your appetites
