ahh well done!
personally i think she should of had more overall red shadow on her- because the light is frontal
but nonetheless it's so well made

DSillustration In reply to OmriKoresh [2012-11-21 00:40:45 +0000 UTC]

If the dragon were the only light source, and I wanted atmosphere instead of legibility, you are correct. perhaps. But with cover art, the legibility of the character is more important, so I use an unexplained spotlight on her. We call it 'Stage Lighting'. It's very typical of pin-ups.

ah, true! didn't think of it that way, i don't paint pinups too much (:
i think i'll apply this tip myself if needed

It's rare to see a female fantasy character that isn't scantily clad. The jeans and chainmail are both very well done, but her pose and expression are the best. It's as though she's looking over her shoulder to say, "Gentlemen, it's go time. Let's wreck someone's day." Keep up the great work!

DSillustration In reply to Codysseus154 [2012-11-21 00:37:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I particularly like this series because of that. The female character is actually a lesbian in the story, so the Publisher allows me portray her a LOT tougher, and far less revealing, than many mainstream heroines.

Codysseus154 In reply to DSillustration [2012-11-21 04:25:17 +0000 UTC]

That's actually a little saddening! The levels of "outfit utility" and "badass-ery" shouldn't be tied to something like orientation. Maybe the publisher will learn someday that straight women can be epic, too.

Absolutely love this piece. It's great to see fantasy work painted so beautifully and sensitively with a traditional medium. The pose is very striking, as well as the dragon's stare.

I would definitely be drawn to a book with this image associated with it!

Lol. It took a while, but not as long as you may think. There are a few methods I use to help speed things up. Still, it took a full day.

A lot of the character's styling comes directly from the novel, so I can't take credit for all of it.
