Description
To say Bethany wasn't the happiest with this arrangement was an understatement, but it only got worse when actually starting class. Sure, all she had to do was help the students stay on track and keep them focused on the lessons about the American Revolution, but Torrent would talk and engage the children with such enthusiasm that they would get riled up constantly. Bethany was gritting her teeth most of the time to not cry out for help trying to get the kids under control, and she wanted to so badly since most of it was Torrent's fault.
"Break time is over Kenny, back to your desk." She told this rowdy, light-brown, pony and he would hold up paper towels he wrapped around the broom, "We got more going on and your holding up the class."
"But I must keep it up, people must know we're doing well!" the pony said as he started to playfully wave it around as he beamed with markings he drew on his own face. "We are surviving!" That was but one of the annoying times during class. Kenny is an imaginative kid, but so active about it too.
And Torrent encouraged this, "Back to your seat now, Kenny. We're gonna cover some iconic heroes of the war. I bet you'd love to hear how they captured a commanding bad guy while he was in his bed." Beth facepalmed, as she knew what this was leading to.
It got Kenny's attention and made him run back to his seat, but Bethany knew that would be all that boy would pretend to be after class. All she could do was wait till it was time for recess, so they would leave and she could clean up the markers and the stains they left from the ones without caps. "The kids seem to be really into this topic, I'm so thrilled." Torrent said as she organized some papers on her desk. "It's such a great story, and it's not even my favorite."
"Yeah, they totally love this stuff." Bethany sighed as she was sweeping pencil shavings off the floor, "Do you got to get so excited about it?"
"Why should I not?" Torrent said, "It's wonderous, It's like the stories, but they actually happened, like finding a treasure or uncovering an old legend."
"Yeah, great, cool, so treat it like a book." Bethany said
Torrent looked at her funny. "What's gotten into you?"
"You're causing the kids to go crazy." Bethany scowled, "I've been doing this for a while and have only had this kind of trouble with kids who are special needs. When you teach them about these lessons on history, you get them bouncing up and down the walls like it's all a massive game."
Torrent's smile stopped showing teeth, but it was still there, "Beth, they're kids. You were one too at one point, know how they think and you can set them up for anything. Kids like Kenny or the Howzer twins are full of energy and like things hands on, so I take a little more time giving them some more active looks at the lessons." Bethany just went from annoyed to agitated, "You do this on purpose? We have rules and a method for this stuff, Torrent." She was trying so hard to not yet, "Doing this kind of stuff goes against school policy doesn't it, You could get in serious trouble."
Torrent thought about it, but then she just shrugged, "It's been a while since I read the rules of this stuff, but I know teaching everyone the same way doesn't work. There's no point to even teaching if you don't try and have them all succeed, that's why I'm going another mile for them even if it's not part of my job." She put her papers in a file and then walked past Bethany, "Give it a try some time." The words stuck with her for a bit, but couldn't help but thing Torrent was just causing trouble down the road. Bethany looked out the window and saw the kids at recess, she could only guess they were trying to reenact that stuff Torrent told them about in class. Using a lot of sticks and things for props, or weapons, as they played, not really getting some details right. Beth thought one more time about what Torrent said, then blew it off. Some kids are just dumber than others, that's why they're there. If some can't learn like the rest, it's not the fault of the teachers.
