One in 20 men and one in 200 women have some form of color blindess that prevents them from seeing color the same way that people without any color vision deficiencies do. For example, some 10 million American men — fully 7 percent of the male population — either cannot distinguish red from green, or see red and green differently from most people.

Because color blindness involves the colors red and green, deviantART's multi-shaded green design is seriously affected by it. Which is why it's important for usability design to make sure that hover effects have more than just a simple color change, especially from one shade of color to another. Or adding in visual cues such as showing an underline on a hover, which will be clear to the user even if they are color blind. Overall, our UI design team has done an admirable job of ensuring that elements on the page can easily be distinguished from one another especially when being navigated with a mouse.

If you're a developer wondering how your applications look for color blind users, you can try out a Colour Blindness Simulator provided by etre.com, uploading your own image. It's limited to 1000x1000 pixels and 100kb. Even better though is the app Color Oracle which simulates a color blind view of whatever you are viewing on your computer. Works on Mac, Windows and Linux.
