Description

When Katie woke up, it was still dark. The pitch-black seemed like a great yawning mouth, ready to swallow the little farmhouse. Still lying perfectly still in her bed, she stared out at the gaping darkness, feeling very small. There was no noise coming from her mother’s room, and all she could hear was the gentle ticking of the grandfather clock in the kitchen.

The old floorboards creaked as the five-year-old stood up, looking cautiously out the door of her room fro some unseen danger. All she could see was her dog, Soldier, stretched out on  the landing, sleeping soundly. As she watched the dozing dog, she suddenly remembered her assignment from yesterday-introduce herself to five people . Her mother’s room was completely silent, and Katie suspected that she had slipped out for the night. She would probably return before it was time to take Katie to kindergarten, but she would be useless for her assignment. She would just have to find something willing to listen to her…

With a smile, she walked to Soldier and flopped down beside him. Lifting his ear cautiously, she yelled “My name is Katie!” loudly into it. Soldier let out a loud whine. He was an old dog, and not used to small children yelling in his ear. With a huge grunt, he picked himself up and followed Katie, who was already bounding towards the back door. Together, they slipped out the screen door of the old farmhouse and hurried out into the mushy snow. Katie made a beeline for the horses’ stable behind the house, eager to see her favorite horse, Midge.

“’Lo, Midge!” Katie shouted, entering the stable. Midge snorted loudly, woken from a deep sleep by the enthusiastic five-year-old. Katie climbed up the door to Midge’s stall and hung her arms over it, petting the horse’s snout. “My name…is Katie!” Katie exclaimed once again, and jumped off the ridge’s of the stall door. Midge whinnied softly, and watched both Soldier and Katie retreat from the stable.

Outside, light was crawling on the edges of the horizon, stretching out tentative fingers to meet the darkness. With a smile, Katie spread her arms and introduced herself to the dawn.

I really like it!!! goodness gracious your writing rocks, girl!

maybe you could have her introduce herself to two other things and then leave the same dawn sentence as the last one (that would make it a bit longer)

shnazzy.
