I love gintoki too (to be honest, I am a fangirl of him XD).
I am so moved . Everyone I know say that the first 20 episodes suck T^T
Anyway, if keep watching it you will be able to see lots of hardcore parodies! In the episode 50, they satirize so many diffenrent things (from "Romeo and Juliet" to "Dragonball").

To be honnest, I was a bit bored myself when I saw the first episodes 
Its humor is different than the humor I have seen on other shonen jump series like bleach and naruto, and that's probably the reason that they didn't like it...I mean there aren't any anime like that who do comments on things like hypoglicemia and hemorrhoids...

I can't believe that anime like naruto and one piece have been licenced and gintama haven't, but as you said it's good because we can find it easier on internet and it's protected from the English dub (if you have seen yu-gi-oh! or blue dragon in dubbed version you will understand what I mean).
I like this kind of humour too! I couldn't stop laughing in the episode 113 were the shinsegumi had to clean the toilets in their headquarters XD.

English programs with Dutch subs are one of the reason I can speak English.. I mean.. dubs should have been prohibited!
