Description
Pencil, ink, acrylic and gouache on illustration boardIt seemed like a place like the Keplinger Institute would have nice pristine modern laboratories, but this is Rowan's nightmare, and she later thinks of Lemle's place as a "Frankenstein lab," so I couldn't resist introducing some of Strickfaden's machines from the original 1931 "Frankenstein."
Rice chose to name her mad scientist "Lemle," apparently after Carl Lemle Jr, the Universal Studios executive who produced so many of the classic horror films of the 1930s. In that same spirit, I modeled the character of Lemle on actor George Zucco, who played mad scientists and other heavies in many of Lemle's films (as well as having played Professor Moriarty in Fox's 1939 "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes").
