Description
So, funny story. When this group first launched, I came up with SO many potential team ideas. After a lot of brainstorming and notes, I was able to condense my options down to four teams. This...is not one of those teams! Heh... This character was actually born from a random comment from a friend around 3am about how it would be fun to do a Mesprit storyteller (because they are the Being of Emotion) who uses their powers to enhance their storytelling. I thought that was cool and decided to doodle some ideas during a meeting...and after I made this character design, I got bit by a plot bunny HARD. Ironically, the team I never planned to make would be the first one I have up, huh? There will be more. I already have the other apps 80% done, and I planned to post them all at once...but I'm going to be a little busy so I figured I might as well get the one I do have done up while I can. I think she's a good one to start with. I love her design a lot and am very happy with how her art came out! Now, onto the needlessly long details!
*****
Starting Guild: Explorers
Name: Narrator
Nickname: Nara (not by choice, she doesn’t like this but some prefer calling her something that sounds more like a name)
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Pokemon: Mesprit
Ability: Levitate - Narrator is able to levitate herself psychically with virtually no effort at all times (even when sleeping). Thus, ground type moves and area hazards have no effect on her, unless something forcefully knocks her out of the air.
Moves:
Extrasensory: The red gems on Narrator’s forehead and tails glow bright scarlet before she hits her target with a pulse of golden psychic energy that wraps and twists around them like a whirlpool. This attack not only assaults the body and mind, but also the heart thanks to Narrator’s skilled pathokinesis. The emotional shock is enough to make a foe freeze up and flinch. This move is twice as effective if she can make physical contact with her target.
Charm: Narrator uses a bit of flowery prose to entrance her target, lowering their will to fight and sharply dropping their attack. She often uses this to draw in an audience for her storytelling, especially with romance or fluff pieces. This move is twice as effective if she can make physical contact with her target.
Nasty Plot: Narrator describes terrible things that will happen to her foe with a dark look in her eyes, stimulating the more malicious side of her imagination and sharply raising her special attack. She often uses this when telling ghost stories or during the climax to make the situation seem more dire. It’s very unsettling to witness.
Rest: Narrator pulls the brim of her hat down over her eyes and curls up, falling asleep instantly to restore her health and heal any status conditions. She can sleep just about anywhere, even in midair, and only needs to power nap a short time to be revitalized. Even when asleep, she is vaguely aware of her surroundings as her spirit can leave her body when sleeping...though straying too far from her body can leave her vulnerable. Regardless, it’s invaluable for long journeys.
Physical appearance:
Narrator has the typical body type of a mesprit, at the average height 1 ft when standing. Levitating makes up for the shortness, at least. She has intelligent golden eyes, yet she always wears a stoic expression, even when claiming to feel strong emotions. Her magenta “hair” functions much like the appendages lucario have on their heads, floating up when she is using her psychic power or sensing aura. The only abnormality Narrator has is some partial shininess. The ends of her twin tails, the base of her tails, and the ends of her hands are a golden color like a shiny mesprit. These markings almost resemble curling flames in shape.
Personal information
Nature: Docile
Characteristic: Often lost in thought
Likes: Reading, telling stories, listening to stories, people watching (with or without their consent), foggy weather, lakes or tranquil bodies of water
Dislikes: Being touched, being stared at, showy gestures of affection, being dragged into the problems of others, physical labor (not lazy but finds muscle work unstimulating)
Personality: Upon first meeting, Narrator comes off as very stoic and not “all there” with her eyes often looking unfocused. Her eyes shine with intelligence and she speaks eloquently, but her tone is always soft and devoid of any emotion. Even when she claims to be feeling a certain way, her voice is monotone and her expression blank. This coupled with her tendency to stare and watch others makes many feel uncomfortable around her. Because of her upbringing and ability to give or take emotions with a touch, Narrator is very emotionally stunted and has trouble appreciating or respecting the feelings of herself or others. That’s not to say Narrator is mean or unapproachable...just very hard for most to get a read on. She just always has her thoughts elsewhere, drafting stories and characters in her head, and it’s hard for her to empathize with others in most settings despite her best efforts. However, when she’s telling stories, Narrator almost becomes an entirely different pokemon. She’s expressive and enthusiastic, able to switch between different character roles on a dime seamlessly. From ghost stories to romances to action thrillers to crime mysteries, she is immensely passionate about storytelling. Stories are borderline magic to her for their ability to evoke emotion through words alone. Sharing a good story feels like the only way she can genuinely connect to other pokemon, and framing questions or tasks as part of a grand tale is a good way to get her involved and interested.
Additional information:
Narrator is not her original name, but a title she took on, like Doctor. It’s unknown if she even had a name before Narrator, as her family and village weren’t exactly ones to celebrate individual identity. Maybe she had a name and simply forgot it?
Narrator describes the hearts of other mons as “messy tapestries.” Using her pathokinesis to control the emotions of others is a lot like weaving, pulling tight or loose different threads to stimulate or nullify different feelings. All it takes is a touch for her to spin the threads however she desires...and this skill has led her to become detached not only from the feelings of others, but her own as well.
Narrator will generally always use her psychic powers to move or hold things. Especially when working with other pokemon. She doesn’t like being touched or touching others because of the assumption (in her mind) that physical contact is only for emotional manipulation.
In spite of her touch-aversion presently, Narrator does way deep down long for little meaningful gestures of affection like hugs or high fives or a pat on the back. It would just take someone she trusts and feels safe with to initiate such a thing.
Narrator wears reading glasses to read fine print or old texts. It is a common sight to see her holding several story drafts around her with her telekinesis, brows furrowed with pen in hand and glasses on the tip of her nose. When not wearing them, she keeps her glasses tucked into her scarf.
History
Ironically, in spite of her sole passion of storytelling, Narrator does not make her own story sound very interesting. She speaks of her life so far very distantly, as though it were not something she lived through but only something she observed from the outside.
Narrator grew up in a village populated solely by mesprit. All, from the young to the old, can use pathokinesis or emotion manipulation through touch. Because of their powers, the villagers have forgotten how to feel and trust genuine emotions. The mesprit residents do feel emotion themselves, but they do not trust any of it, believing it to all be something temporary, false, or forced upon them by another. Pathokinesis is their born talent, after all. Why shouldn't they always twist emotions to suit their needs? Every day, every interaction with another villager, is a constant battle of wills and who is the better weaver. Hugs and other physical affection certainly are not a regular thing, even among family. Narrator’s mom only touched her when she needed to regulate her emotions. Not that this is abnormal. It's how the whole village is.
Those lucky (or unlucky) enough to find their village never leave. Whenever some poor soul stumbles into the village, the villagers pounce on the outsider like ravenous dogs. It's a new unguarded heart to toy with! If they are strong hearted, such visitors might last a week before their heartstrings are completely unraveled and shredded by the mesprit. They are a truly terrifying society.
Narrator can’t name what emotion drove her to leave the village, even now years later. But, she did. She wandered aimlessly from town to town, a stoic shell of a pokemon, until she happened upon a bewildering sight to her eyes. A latias & latios orating a grand story to an eager audience. The twin dragons were able to ensnare the attention of any who passed and pull at their heartstrings without any special power. Narrator herself was spellbound by their stories, feeling her heart race with foreign emotion for the first time. After the crowd dispersed, Narrator insisted that the two storytellers explain the “magic” they had performed. They did one better and taught Narrator the basics of writing and telling a good story. She attended many more of their orations over the next few days before it was time for them to leave town and move on. She was surprised to feel frustrated by their leaving, as her own stories she had tried to craft were still bland and boring. The twin dragons gave her each one of their feathers for good luck and one piece of parting advice. Being a good storyteller required empathy, and it would do her good to travel and hear the stories of other pokemon, from all walks of life, if she ever wanted to spin a yarn that would capture the hearts of all who heard it.
Narrator’s life has been solely driven by her desire to craft the perfect story ever since. Collecting, creating, and telling stories is her passion and the only thing she expresses visible emotion over. She’s gotten fairly good at taking on different character roles when telling a story...though she still doesn’t have the best grasp on the “empathy” her mentors told her to cultivate. Coming through the fog and arriving in Castanet is just another page in her on-going journey. She’s settled with the Explorers for now because of Madeline’s promise that they have the most exciting adventures. Narrator doesn’t care about the guilds or helping others, but such adventures are sure to be good inspirations for her stories. Though, she keeps that little fact to herself.
