This map shows Southern Ukraine in Eastern Europe. From 20 February 2014 to 21 March 2014, Russia invaded and illegally annexed back Crimea from Ukraine. On 7 April 2014, the DPR declared its independence from Ukraine. On 27 April 2014, the LPR declared its independence from Ukraine. The international community has not recognized the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics. Russia and the Donbass separatist states had covered one-third of the Donbass region during the Donbass war from 2014 to 2022. As of April 2022 by the time of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, about 51,000 mi² of Ukrainian territory was under control by Russia and the Donbass separatist states. On 30 September 2022, Russia annexed the Donbass, Zaporozhye, and Kherson regions. The international community has not recognized the Donbass, Zaporozhye, and Kherson regions as part of the Russian Federation.
