Description

Another 2019 drawing for the D&D creature type construct. Any being that is consciously created by another being, usually artificial without the ability to reproduce on its own. Constructs can range from automatons to ushabti (spirits inhabiting clay statues) to alchemical homunculi.

Speaking of which: that homunculus. In D&D, most homunculus are simply gargoyles: grotesque humanoids with grey/green skin and bat-like wings. Not very interesting, visually. Looking back to their origins, they had a lot to do with human origins and semen. Lots of old pictures of tiny grown men inside of sperm. That prompted me to design the homunculus as an fetus-like creature; a humanoid sort of Mew. If you believe Mew's origin as an embryo/fetus figure. Its creator does not seem thrilled. The other two are less design-heavy. The tiny servant and flying sword were already drawn for the old Daily D&D series. Given life, the objects take on an insectile appearance. While some like the flying sword will take on a life of their own, the tiny servant is dependent entirely on its creator.

Speaking of, meet Mary! Like a lot of my D&D NPCs, she started off as a vague idea for the TDG Acronym Pending stories. In desperation to populate my campaign, I looted the TDG archives for background characters, and in that time she developed and took a more defined shape than she ever would have sitting in an old txt file. She's a high school student who really, really wants to help people. She tutors, she baby-sits, she plans every outing with her friends so no one is left out. How can she continue to do this as an adult and not succumb to the horrible realities of corporate America? Seek out a wizard and beg him to train her. Impeccable logic. Unfortunately, as you could tell above, it's not as glamorous as she imagined.
