Cub – Rani was quite the responsible cub; she tried to stay out of trouble, she helped keep her brother in line, and took a lot of things seriously. But there would always be something or someone to distract her and remind her that she was still a kid, and that she should have fun. When she wasn’t playing, she was listening to her grandmother’s stories, and learning of the responsibilities that would fall upon her after her father’s ruling. Unfortunately, due to an accident that resulted in her losing her parents, and scarring her leg, those responsibilities would come sooner than she thought.
Adult – If she was serious as a cub, Rani was even more so as she grew up. No more were the carefree days of cubhood, in her mind; she had no time for such nonsense. She spent her days learning everything she could about politics and the lay of the land. And she realized that her pride, only consisting of her aging grandmother, clumsy brother, uncle, and a family friend, was tiny. She would have no choice but to seek out other lions to invite in, or to set up a betrothal to join her kingdom to another. As if it were fate, a young male lion was spotted entering her territory, with a strange group of animals at his side. This couldn’t possibly be the solution to Rani’s problem! ... Could it?

In light of me posting my TLK character profiles to the official King of the Sanctuary Tumblr, and me wanting to get canon characters out there before KotS OCs, I started to work on Lion Guard characters, since they were the only canon lion characters left (I won't be working on hyenas for now) The Night Pride are up first, sans Janna, and Rani's parents (until I can figure out a system for getting their proper colors) So, Rani is up first.

First thing's first, I did away with the forehead paint. Bird poop jokes courtesy of aside, it seems kinda silly to wear it all day. So, I'm saving it for special occasions, like weddings, funerals, celebrations; maybe even important meetings. I know she's also meant to have spots on her legs, similar to Kion, but I can barely see them, and so forgot about them. Probably not too big of a deal; this wouldn't be the first time I subtracted or added a detail from and to a character.

I didn't realize she had a scar until HydraCarina posted their pic, The Royal Family of the Tree of Life, and pointed it out. In the show, it's a tiny little pink stripe down the inside of her front right leg. I decided to expand it into a four-clawed scar; maybe she was trying to save someone from falling and they scratched at her so she wouldn't go down with her, ala Ahadi's death from 's story? At any rate, I think it looks a bit better than one claw (kinda hypocritical of me to say, seeing as I kept Scar and Kovu's single-clawed scars the same, but whatever)

Reading up on Rani's personality, she's described as someone who is headstrong, quick to judge, and stubborn. Obviously, she has a softer and more vulnerable side, but I imagine that's reserved for family and close friends; she's seemed to have lost a lot of family. Not to mention is next in line for the throne, which is being taken up by her very-elderly grandmother. As shown by her images, she was a bit more playful and friendly as a cub, but becomes much more serious as she grows older. Combined with Kion's open-mindedness and friendliness to all creatures, and you've got an interesting power-dynamic of a couple.

UPDATE: When typing out Rani's personality (BTW, didn't realize until recently I was pronouncing it wrong; so, it's been update) especially as an adult, one character that came to mind was Jane Darling, Wendy's daughter from Peter Pan: Return to Neverland, one of my favorite Disney sequels (if you haven't seen it yet, but you like Peter Pan, I think you'll enjoy this; it's probably on Disney+ right now, if you have it) For most of the movie, Jane is a very practical and serious child, a side-effect of growing up during WWII and having a brother to look after, and is very put-off by "childish nonsense", which is Peter Pan and his stories that she too used to love (it's actually really sad when you think about how this kid had to grow up so quickly; I don't believe she said how old she is, but she can't look much older than 10, at least) And with Rani's story that I have in mind, that fits really perfectly.

I was also curious that from what I've read of TLG, there wasn't much mention of how truly tiny the Night Pride is. I wonder if Janna ever mentioned how Rani would need to find a king to marry someday if she wanted to provide an heir (before Kion came along, of course) AND to expand the pride. I might not have a valid reason for Kion going off and seeking the Night Pride and/or Tree of Life, but I can get an idea of why Rani would be so eager to marry him.
