Description
oh my god, i'm so sorry computer for making you send this gigantic file...you might want to download this to see it better...
while you wait for this behemoth to load, i suggest you go to the automated carwash and clean the winter gunk off of your car. they have lovely colored soaps that surround your car that you can watch. it's like an acid trip, but much less brain damaging.
anyway, here's a tutorial on prismacolor colored pencils coloring. I hope it answers some of the questions people have been asking me lately.

Egh, the colors got all screwed up by the camera though. XP Man, thank you sooo much for this tutorial. Now I feel that I have better control over the pencils now.

Cool as this tutorial is . . . it doesn't help. Sorry, but all I learned was the order you like to do things. You didn't mention HOW you blend or how you decide what colors are needed.
Guess I'm the only one who didn't find this helpful . . . Sorry . . .
Wonderful drawing, though . . . It's TOO perfect . . .

sorry...the order i think has a bit to do with it...i mentioned where i use the pencils with more pressure and when i don't, which is really the only way i know how to blend..you can play with the colors you want, what is or can be reflected in areas, look closely at the reference, or what you think would look cool...
i guess the best way to learn is to just play around with them..

I also know that everyone has their own personal preference on how they color. Like, I believe in starting with the lightest color possible first, then darkening as I go, adding other colors and layers. And sometimes I do black last instead of first, but it really depends on what (or who) it is I'm drawing. And, well, my blending skills suck. The way my drawings turn out, it's PAINFULLY obvious that they were colored with colored pencil. Your stuff . . . well, they might as well be colored digitally, the way they look.
Sorry, I just see your stuff and I get insanely jealous and feel like I can't be as good as you. I mean, I know that with practice I can get as good as you, but since I haven't been motivated to do any good artwork lately, that's going to take a while. And, also, I have no pencil sharpeners that make my colored pencils sharp and pointy. And my Prismacolors are the thicker kind, too (since they were cheaper than the thinner ones) so making them sharp is not easy. Plus, my colored pencils are a mishmash collection of different brands, not all that are good.
Ugh, I want to draw so badly now, but I have no motivation. I feel like I don't have the patience to sit down for two or three hours and dish out a masterpiece. And I don't believe that taking a step back and let myself rest is a good idea. If I do that, I'll never get started. I'll just get into the habit of NOT doing anything. And my job makes me not do any artwork. Even during work, I'm not thinking about anything that I like. I don't even think about story ideas and drawing ideas while working. It's like work is pushing my true self away. I don't hate my job, I just hate what my job does to me.
Well, I have work at 12 today . . . I really should draw something before I have to leave, but I don't know what I want to do.
Ah man, now I'm really upset . . .

there are plenty of people out there that i wish i could draw like, but i certainly don't get upset about it. i look at their work and use it as inspiration to get better, not stop where i'm at...lord knows if i stopped drawing the first time i was intimidated by someone, i would have never gotten anywhere. it's true, i might be a little jealous of their abilities, but only because i hold deep respect for them. taking a break or a hiatus isn't a bad idea, i do it from time to time when my schedule is too much to bear. if you're having trouble, don't start out with thinking, "i want to make a masterpiece!" start out smaller, like, "i want to play around, see how this method of blending will go.." i didn't get good with colored pencils overnight, and most of my earlier work is down right awful. i would perhaps suggest you stick with one brand of colored pencils to begin with, and maybe get a feel for that one brand, then expand later. i use a few different brands, but i usually stick to one of them, for a consistent drawing. some pencils brands are made with very different ingredients, or harness levels that can really affect the way that a picture can come out, more often than not, they will affect it in a negative way. i use the harder leads for last minute details like errant hairs, or freckles.
it's normal to get in a funk, but when you get out of it, start drawing small, just doodling around, and playing with what you have. i find that i learn more from aimless doodles than making finished drawings. keep practicing, if you can, even if they are just little drawings, and look at them a year from now, and i'm sure you'll be impressed with the improvements you've made.
upon looking through your gallery, i can see where you've gotten better in seemingly no time...and i think you'll be fine.

Still doesn't make me feel any better. And with my colored pencils, they are all old, like from elementary or middle school and they're a bunch of different brands. The Prismacolors are my newest, and I only bought a few colors since I was limited on money when I got them. I don't like how they're textured, however. I like my stuff to be smooth. They get textured, even if I'm coloring on non-textured paper. And I find that I am not the "random doodling" type. I'm not able to draw anything without a clear picture in my head of what I'll be doing. Otherwise, I'll be staring at a blank piece of paper for an hour. I like to do finished pieces, even if they're not colored. Aimless doodles do nothing for me. Doodles for me are almost always cartoons, so that doesn't help with doing realistic stuff. And, one reason why I'm taking this jealousy thing so hard is the fact that I've been depressed the last couple of days. Actually, I feel so depressed right now I wish I didn't have to go to work today. I can't explain why I'm feeling this way, but the whole art thing is just making me feel even worse now.

If you're concerned about realistic doodles, why not start out easy like take a banana and draw that, testing out your colors. Then soon you can draw an entire bowl of fruit...and then eventually work on people. That way you don't have to worry about turning the banana into a masterpiece and you have something you can actually look at while you draw. I'm not necessarily the best coloring artist either but that might help you out.

Call me stubborn, but I can't stand drawing inanimate objects. And I'm not bad at drawing people, I just look at other people's coloring skills and I weep for my work.

Just sayin' that way you don't have to fawn over it like it's a masterpiece and you can fool around with colors....draw like....a chipmunk then ...I looked at your stuff too, it's good stuff.....I think you're even more obsessed with TDK than I am!!! lol

I am always so scared to color my drawings....which is why when I finally decided to color one, I copied my drawing onto drawing paper and colored that...My colored Jack Sparrow drawing was done that way. But this tutorial is great help anyway. I don't know what I did when I colored Jack...I think I did something similar but not nearly as detailed.

that's a good idea! i've ruined lots of my early works by coloring them odd...one of my favorite sketches i colored about a year ago of vincent, i overdid it on the purple, and he looked pretty terrible the sketch was pretty good, but the color job killed it..i wish i though of that! very clever.

the only problem was that I drew the original with all the shadows and everything, so when I colored it, I didn't get the right colors because I was coloring over dark areas...if that makes sense.

derwent? i have a few of those! i think they're harder to use..the leads are not as forgiving..but i don't have much experience with them, to be fair. glad it helped!

I wish i had coloursofts or whatnot :U
What kind of derwents do you have?
Ive got studio, artists and watercolours :3

EatToast In reply to AquaEden [2008-12-28 15:21:13 +0000 UTC]
i only have a handful of studio ones..they don't get used very much. watercolor pencils are a lot of fun. they're the first colored pencils i started to use.

Heh, my studios havent seen the light of day in awhile -coughcough- I think the black pencil is almost shaved into extinction pffft xD
