Description
I packed my bag, made my parents, with various essentials I would need for the biggest adventure I would have yet. “Sewing needle, 2 paper clips, extra clothes, yarn, water sack, blanket, gauze, and I think that’s about it!” I whispered to myself, closing the bag and buttoned it up with the one button on the bag. The weight luckily wasn’t as bad as I thought though that would be debatable when I packed some food as well. I looked around my old room one last time and smiled sadly as this was probably the last time I would see this room for a while.I went into the living room where my parents sat. They looked up at me, my mom had tears in her eyes and my dad look sad. “ I can’t believe my baby is so grown up!” My mom cried out, rushing over to me and giving me a big hug. I smiled softly and hugged her back. My dad slowly stood up and made his way over to us.
“Never thought I would see this day come but here I am.” He gave a sad smile, happy I was taking the next step in my life but still wish he had more time to keep his precious child under his wing.
We all hanged out in the living room, talking about old stories from our past and generally having a good time until night time came. My dad got up from his seat and stretched. “Would you like to go on one more borrowing mission before you leave tomorrow?” He asked, even though he knew my answer.
I nodded excitingly and ran over to my backpack to pull out my supplies but my dad stopped me by putting his hand on my shoulder. “You should keep your supplies plentiful for your trip. We’ll be using my gear for this trip.” He suggested and I agreed.
“See you soon mom!” I told her as we hugged again.
“Alright, just don’t get yourself hurt!” She warned us before giving my dad a kiss and we were off.
You may be wondering why someone would need something as useless yarn and paper clips for a trip. Well if you were human then these items would be useless to you but as a borrower, these were essentials. What’s a borrower you may ask? Well I guess you could just call us miniatures versions of humans.
“Alright (Y/n) Take what you think you’ll need for the trip.” My dad told me. We were only allowed to grab what we needed, not what we wanted. It was a part of borrower code to keep us from being found.
My dad was only here to supervise me since I needed to show him I was capable of grabbing what I needed and not what I wanted. I grabbed a few crumbs of bread off the counter and went over to the fruit bowl and scaled it to grab a grape. It took a few attempts to pluck the grape, which was about the size of half of my body, but it finally gave out, tumbling onto the counter alongside me.
A door slowly opened and my dad and I hid behind the fruit bowl with the grape. Another borrower code, never get caught by humans. The human that lived with my parents was never a threat as they were always out of the house and came home late at night only to sleep. The human closed the door behind him and turned left which is where his room was. We stayed in our hiding position until we heard a click of the door, indicating he was in his room.
I sighed and rolled the grape off the counter which luckily didn’t break from the fall. My dad and I climbed down the rope connected to the counter and I went over to the grape and rolled it towards our entrance to the walls of the house as my dad unhooked the paper clip from the counter.
This is what it was like for us borrowers, we usually scavenged for essentials at night, stayed inside all day unless we were really in need of a supply, and stayed out of sights from the humans. It’s sounds like a boring, simple life but it was an adventure for us everyday

“Remember, any house with a mouse is a no go.” My dad told me.
“Yeah, we don’t want you ending up like your uncle.” My mom added on, “Oh and don’t even think about trying to live with any family that has a small child or teenager. Children our so dangerous while the teens get too curious.”
“Remember if you get caught, you are to leave the house and search for another immediately!”
“Stay away from cats as well!”
“Be careful of other borrowers out their, not all of them are friendly to us house folk.”
“Don’t ever go to the sewers to get supplies from other borrowers, they’ll tell that you’re a house folk instantly!” My parents chided on and on as I stood at the exit to the house’s front yard. Today was the day I was leaving my parents like every borrower did at 21. It was pretty exciting that I was going to find myself a house I thought would be safe and I would be able to make my own choices. I no longer had to live under my parents protection and I could finally be independent! Of course I was sad and a little scared that I wouldn’t have my parents to fall back to anymore and that I would be borrowing on my own. I have before obviously, but knowing when I came back that no one would be there was a little scary.
“I get it, I get it. I’ll be careful, I promise!” I chuckled giving my parents one last hug. My dad comforted my shaking mom who was having a hard time keeping herself together. Seeing my parents like that got me a little teared up. I walked over to them slowly and let my tears fall out “I’ll miss you guys so much.” I muttered through my sobbing. We stayed there hugging for awhile until my dad pulled away.
“Well kiddo, I think it’s time for you to leave, wouldn’t want you traveling in the dark.” He stated solemnly. I nodded in agreement, knowing he was right though not wanting to speak because I knew I would loose it again. I turned around towards the exit, the door to my new life.
“Goodbye.” I waved to my parents one last time before hopping out, landing on the soft grass.
It has been about 3 hours and I’ve only been able to check two houses. The first one I found was littered with children's toys in the front lawn, clearly indicating they had lots of them which was an instant no. The second house was decent until I came face to face with a mouse. I luckily have my sewing pin which scared off the mouse but I wasn’t about to fight a bunch of mice for a house. The neighborhood I was looking through was fairly quiet which was good since not a lot of people were out and about, making me feel a bit easier since I wasn’t ready to face a human. I barely saw the human at my old house, only silhouettes of him through the darkness. I never been close to him as he was always gone, which was a good thing.
‘Man, finding a house is going to be harder than a thought.’ I mumbled, kicking a nearby pebble. I decided now would be a good resting time since I was in a jungle of overgrown grass. I sat down and pulled out a small slice of grape and began chewing on it.
‘Alright, guess it’s time to keep searching.’ I thought to myself after finishing the small slice. ‘Now where to next?’ I asked myself, stepping out from the lawn to the side walk. All I saw was a giant dog that was staring down at me. ‘Oh gosh!’ I slightly panicked. The dog looked like a golden retriever, like the one at childhood house, before we found the busy man’s house.
‘Ok, don’t panic, remember what your dad said. These dogs are very obedient so if I show them I’m the boss, they’ll leave me alone.’ I told myself, taking deep breaths. The first time I went borrowing was when I was 13 and my dad had brought me out. We got caught by the dog and I almost fainted but my dad told me to show them dominance and they would leave us alone which it did! I looked up at the dog, who was panting, looking down at me, waiting to see what I would do.
“Sit!” I yelled in the sternest way I could. The dog actually listened! ‘I guess my dad didn’t just befriend that other dog, lucky me.’ I thought and sighed as it worked. “Lay down.” I yelled again and the dog listened again. I slowly walked towards the dog’s neck and gave it a slight pet to show them we were friends. My dad said you had to reward the dog or else it would still chase you.
“Such a good dog.” I said into the dog’s ear and saw their tail wag. ‘I guess I can go on my way then.’ I smiled to myself, still petting the dog. Suddenly a voice rang out,
“Chica, come here girl!” the voice told the dog, now known as Chica. Chica instantly got up from the laid position I put them in. I quickly grabbed onto the fur of the dog as she got up and ran towards the voice. I would’ve let the dog go if the human wasn’t there. If I didn’t go with the dog, the human would surely see me. It was extremely hard to hold onto the dog as she ran but luckily and a little unfortunately she stopped. I quickly climbed over and under the dog’s collar to hide from the human’s sight.
“Hi chica bica! Finally caught you. You know better than to run off. Come on, let’s go home!” A man’s deep voice rang out, obviously being the owner of the dog. He grabbed the dog’s leash and began to lead them home.
‘Looks like I’ll have to go along. Maybe this house will be the right house?’ I told myself as I was taken along with the dog to where ever the man lived.
