Isabel is the main character and the protagonist of Ashes. Ashes is the third book in the “Seeds of America” trilogy by Laurie Halse Anderson. Isabel is a young African American slave. In the start of the first book, Chains, she was around thirteen. By the end of Ashes, she was around seventeen years old. While not many physical descriptions of her were given, it can be assumed, through context clues and cover images, that Isabel has dark skin, dark brown eyes, and black or brown hair that is around medium length. Isabel is also very fit and strong for her age, having worked and done labor for the portion of her life before her escape, which then she lived off the land. One of Isabel’s biggest physical traits is her branding scar which she was given by her old master. Madam Lockton, I for Insolence. Instead of letting this wear her down, Isabel takes it with pride saying the I stands for Isabel and Independence. She is a very headstrong and logical character with relationships that run deep.
