Description
There's an old native legend about this mountain. If you look at it the right way, it looks like a woman sleeping on her side. That's why Mount Susitna is also known as The Sleeping Lady.Legend holds that Alaska was once a tropical land of giants, a peaceful race that populated the shores of Cook Inlet. A long time ago, a young man and woman of that tribe were to be married, but the wedding plans were interrupted when news came of warriors from the north. Instead of meeting the coming tribe in battle, the young man led his people with gifts in order make peace.
The woman, named Susitna, stayed awake for days to await news of her love. Eventually, she collapsed from exhaustion, and slept deeply. When news came of a terrible battle and the death of her betrothed, Susitna's friends believed it would be kinder not to wake her. They wove her a blanket of wildflowers and let her sleep. In the winter her blanket is white, and in the summer a new cloth of wildflowers grows.
It is said that when men no longer seek battle and are able to live in peace, then the Sleeping Lady's love will return to the earth and Susitna will awake to welcome him.
