Oops, didn't see the "critique" part.
So, this here's my first "critique" as well, despite it already being a comment(sry).

To take a song from a movie many of us have grown to ignore and apply it to your own art/story is so impressive that it catches the reader off guard. I give this screen(despite the clearly still growing artistic skill) a 8/10 in regards to ingenuity of comic montage and keeping to a storyline on it's set path all the while keeping the feel of both fandoms evenly affecting one another.

Also, Gallopfray? Cool ponification! Onwards with the reading!

pre critique thoughts:
before i get to the serious critique i must say this i love what you did with the music idea. i cant speak for anyone else but i can honestly say that i was singing along and rocking out to it as i read. strangers like me is one of my all time favorite songs!

also before i get to the critique plz note that i am not familiar with the doctor who show and im am basing this only on the comic as itself. and that i am critiquing the comic as a whole not just this chapter

that being said now onto the critique:

vision:
the idea behind this comic is amazing. and the direction you take displaying it is wonderful i wish i knew more about doctor who i might be able to say more but sadly that is not the case.

originality:
the idea of doctor whoofs being the doctor is a bit over done. however, i do like the spin you've taken on it. you have something the others didn't...lyra... i love how you added lyra in and the rest of the background cast. this makes up for the fact of the doctor bit being a bit overdone.

technique:
i am not an artist so i cant honestly tell you any techniques to improve your drawing style although even if i could i wouldn't say anything lol the way you draw them is excellent and i enjoy reading every chapter.

impact:
this story is both touching and serious i enjoy the small bits of humor and joy along with the seriousness of him being a time lord.

this is a great story and i have enjoyed reading it and will continue to read it as long as it goes on keep up the good work!

So it's my first time writing a Critique.

I want to say that the whole comic was flawless. The music adds a great touch and fits the whole thing perfectly. As for the technique, I think it could still improve a little bit, but it's really great. There's only one thing I'd improve about it, and it's the doors. They just look too square. Aside from that, the technique is completely flawless.

This is my favourite comic of the whole series. The thing between Lyra and the Doctor is not only funny but also lovely. And your style improved a lot between your previous comic and this one.

Wow, just wow. I love when people put comics to music like this. I played the song in the background while I read this. It made this whole strip feel like a great Disney montage. I'm a big fan of the Lyra-obsesses-over-humans meme, and this is just a brilliant way of presenting it. This continues that excellent character interaction between the Doctor and Lyra. I don't really remember Tarzan enough to know how many parallels you used, but I'd bet there are quite a few, like seeing himself in the water and how to hold things properly.

But instead of just going for that, which would be the easier route, you've also included the returning of the favor by having Lyra teaching the Doctor about being a pony. So the song applies to both of their points of view, which is a step beyond what most artists would go for.

The whole thing was very well executed, and I love this style that you use. There are a couple misspellings in the piece that distracted me, "description" at the very top, and the first "everybody" on the poster. Also, in the panel sixth from the bottom ("where there's beauty beyond your dreams"), I'm really not sure what that's supposed to be. I'm pretty sure about the bird, but the other thing looks like a shrubbery wielding a Bowie knife. Now, I just went back again to look at it and caught the subtle coloring of the words. They indicate the point of view, and the last part is graded to show it is sung by both. So many layers to this! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

I gotta say this really worked, and of course, the more I look at it, the more I like it. It really moved me, and I think it will help move along the story line. Adding the music link was extremely helpful, and I almost was this whole thing animated in my head as I read and listened. It also made me wonder how Derpy is going to handle Lyra becoming so close to the Doctor. It's a great way to set things up.

I just had to reply to this beautifully written critique!

I think the Disney Tarzan is a more dramaticized version of the original Edgar Rice Burroughs character(I think he was the one who invented the character).

I'm pretty sure Edwardo saw the parallel between the man who was raised by apes suddenly encountering his own kind and Doctor Whooves, who's been a humanoid timelord all of his life/lives; and now suddenly finds himself being a PONY timelord, and has to learn everything all over again.

Like Tarzan's human/romantic interest counterpart Jane(who played a key role in teaching Tarzan to be more human), Edwardo set up Lyra to be Doctor Whooves' PONY counterpart. I don't know if he intends to have them both become romantically involved; but it would be fun to see, if he does. I'm pretty sure Bon Bon will have a LOT to say about this, if this is what ultimately happens; and maybe Derpy as well.

While Phil Collins' "Strangers Like Me" may be the ideal background song for the strip, I feel another song may fit in with this comic(though not as well): "Strange Animal" by Gowan.

I don't know if I'll be allowed to put up the link:

[link]

Hmm. It seems to work.

Anyway, thank you for reading this.

In case you didn't know, Gowan was a very popular pop singer in Canada from the mid to late 80s. "Strange Animal" was the title track of his album released in 1984. He also had two other big hits off of that album: "A Criminal Mind" and "Cosmetics"(which I also both like).

This is the first time I'm writing an artwork critique. I hope I'm doing this right.

First off, I wanna say that I really love how you've been able to meld the lyrics of the song into your comic. I could see it play out like a movie in my mind!

Also, Phil Collins is my asbolute favourite singer of all time! His songs and music had touched me in so many ways ever since I was a kid. It would be nice if MLP hired him to write and sing the songs for them, but that would mean shoveling out the big royalties to him. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/let… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Lick)"/>

I'm also surprised to see how well Lyra is teaching Doctor Whooves to behave like a pony. Of all the ponies I know, she was the one I least expected to be able to tech Doctor Whooves the ins and outs of ponydom, but she's going a fine job here!

Finally, I love this storyline. Keep up the good work! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Who better to teach how to act like a pony than somepony who's had to fake it herself. Everypony else takes it so much for granted that they can't really teach it, but Lyra has to subdue her odd habits and remember to be a proper pony. I think if something comes to one with effort, it's easier to know the steps to get there.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

karkovice1 In reply to mandydax [2012-05-26 14:11:39 +0000 UTC]

*nods* Of course. I was just very surprised, though, that Eduardo was able to portray Lyra being able to do the job so well. Knowing Lyra's persona, I felt that she was the WORST candidate for the job. I saw it as like me trying to teach someone the finer points of higher mathematics(that I know absolutely nothing about!). "the blind leading the blind", so to speak.

But I saw it as like me trying to teach a newbie how to play golf(that I play frequently, but I'm not even close to being a professional). Lyra's definitely not a professional pony, but she knows enough about being a pony to teach Doctor Whooves the basics; which is what made me fall in love with the comic.

I also loved the exchange of information between Lyra and the Doctor. While Lyra was teaching him everything it took to be a proper pony, the Doctor was teaching her everything he knew about humans/humanoids.

Plus, the fact that he used lyrics of a Phil Collins song(my absolute most favourite singer of all time) that made visualize the scene in my head like I was watching a movie was what he go all over this comic, and compelled me to post my first critique on it.

I also love the storyline, and I'm anxious to see how this will play out.

'nuff said.

First of all, the idea of a Doctor Who musical number is amazing-Get on it BBC. With this strip, I must say that it is quite impressive. Though many of the ways you purvey the learning experiences of the Doctor and Lyra are generic, I can't get past the visual charm that they have. The image of The Doctor staring into the reflection his regular form is haunting, and many of the development between Lyra and The Doctor done in this strip through the visuals alone is quite remarkable. The artwork is mostly well done, but it is inconsistent at time, best to look out for that. However, I the cliffhanger with the door at the end (which oh dear I hope means what I think it means) is a scene that really leaves the reader wanting more. Fantastic job, this may be my favorite page yet. Best of luck in the future.

Awesome definition and quality in this comic. You made the possibilities around the unexpected with this. You made me feel the same way that I felt the first time I heard that song with that lovely movie.

The song depicts (as well as this comic e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>) the wonders that can come when a teacher shows you the things that you never heard before.

And because of that, I congratulate you...you made a great impact into this awesome comic, just by simply adding a little bit of colour into the comic (by colour, I mean doing a little bit of emotion into the scene, with a song that really depicts the background into this story)...

You did such an excellent job, that now I'm more than hyped to see how this story unfolds into the next chapter e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>.

Brohoof to you, and your awesome story e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/> /)
