Part 3: Explanations and choicesEevee once again felt himself slam into the ground. This time, he didn’t feel any pain or fall unconscious. Instead, he opened his eyes and found that they had been transported to a dark room. The only light was from a doorway leading to another room and from both Charmander and Charizard’s tail flames.
“Well, glad to see you back in one piece.” A voice said as a light flickered on.
A kecleon was standing in the doorway, holding a sword and sheath in one hand and a bag of chips in the other. Blakii smiled and walked over.
“So it’s finished?” He asked.
The Kecleon nodded, “Indeed it is. The damage was pretty minor. Just some nicks that had to be fixed was all.”
“Thanks Kecleon, I owe you one for this.” Blakii replied as he took the blade and examined it, “You didn’t get any of your potato snacks on Tsuki-hikari did you?”
“Not a chance.” Kecleon replied with a twinge of impatience, “You know I wouldn’t be that careless with a friends’ weapon. Especially not one as fine as Tsuki-hikari.”
Blakii strapped the sheath onto his side and slipped the sword into it, “Kimori won’t stand a chance now that I have Tsuki-hikari back in my hands.”
“Need I remind you that Kimori is the reason you had to have me repair your sword?” Kecleon replied, “That sceptile has been after your hide since you beat him in combat and wiped out his squad single handedly. That was a harsh blow to his honor and his reputation as an unbeatable fighter, after all.”
“Now if only we could find a way to keep Blakii away from the other girls.” Vulpix said quietly to Eevee, “That fight turned him into a regular celebrity. And he loves the attention.”
Blakii smiled as he remembered the fight. Kimori had cornered Blakii alone with his squad. With a combination of quick attacks and sword play, every one of Kimori’s squad had been eliminated. Swords clashed, metal impacted metal as attacks were used, and fighting words had been exchanged as Blakii and Kimori dueled. Finally, just as it seemed that Blakii would lose this fight, he unleashed a powerful blast from an attack that only the most powerful of pokémon knew. The hyper beam. The attack threw Kimori back into a wall with tremendous force. As the sceptile had slipped in unconsciousness, Blakii got to his feet and escaped. The fight had both humiliated Kimori and caused Blakii to gain enough popularity among the other teams that would rival that of any pop star.
Eevee and Charmander looked to each other and shrugged. Neither one knew what was going on, but Eevee had a feeling that something wasn’t right here. Swords, armor, their change of form, everything seemed off and yet he felt somewhat comfortable with this new world. Like he’d been there all his life.
The Kecleon looked at them and gasped, “Is that really-?”
“We don’t know yet.” Blakii said, cutting him off, “It could be, but at the same time we know it can’t be.”
“You never did find their bodies.” Kecleon reminded him, “Those graves are still empty.”
“Can’t be what? Whose bodies and what graves?” Eevee asked as his voice grew more aggressive, “Will someone tell us what’s going on here?”
“Alright, but not in here.” Blakii said, “It’d be easier to show you. Vulpix and Houndour, you’re dismissed until further notice. Get some rest. You did well. Charizard, stay with me and these two, ok?”
The dragon nodded, “After all, we did see most of what happened.”
“Most of what?” Charmander asked, and then he had a thought, “Wait, are you two…”
“No.” Charizard said, knowing what Charmander was getting at, “Just because we are your final forms doesn’t mean that we are you two.”
Blakii lead the three to a brighter room. Eevee realized that they were underground. The entire place was an underground base. Circular hallways were lit with torches, their light flickering as the flames danced upon the wooded top of the torches.
They came to an intersection and Blakii turned to the right. As Eevee, Charmander, and Charizard followed, the umbreon opened a heavy, steel door. Bright, hot sunlight poured in from the outside as the door swung open. Eevee felt he dry breeze slap against him as he walked outside. The same landscape met his eyes. A harsh and unforgiving wasteland that spanned as far as the eye could see.
Eevee then realized that they were standing in a graveyard. Headstones were lined up six in a row, but the rows stretched farther in each direction. A lot of dead pokémon were here. Some, he guessed, had died heroically, fighting the odds even though they knew they couldn’t win. Others had probably died naturally or from wounds that couldn’t be healed. A few had markings on them, which Eevee recognized to be team insignias.
“What the heck is all this?” Charmander asked, “Are all of these rescue teams?”
“I’ll tell you in a minute, but there are two graves you two need to see before I can explain anything.” Blakii said solemnly.
As they walked the rows, Blakii stopped at two graves that were separated from the rest by a large hill. These two were not the ordinary headstones made from granite as the rest were, but made from hard diamond. One with a sapphire embedded in it, the other, a ruby. Under the two was the same insignia that was now donned on the armor the two were wearing.
Eevee felt cold suddenly. Chills began to run down his spine, making his fur stand on end. His eyes told him the truth his mind couldn’t understand. He knew who these two graves belonged to. Eevee looked at Charmander and saw that his friend was close to tears. Eevee felt like crying as well, but he knew that he had to remain strong. Maybe his guess was wrong. Maybe it wasn’t who he thought it was.
“Eevee, Charmander.” Blakii said quietly, “You’re dead. You both died two years ago in the collision.”
“What collision?” Eevee asked, fearing that he already knew the answer.
“When the meteor hit,” Charizard explained, “you two were caught in the first blast wave after trying to evacuate the town to the safety of the underground caverns.”
“No!” Charmander exclaimed as tears began to streak down his cheeks, “No! We stopped the meteor! Rayquaza destroyed it after we beat him and asked him to help! It never hit!”
“No, you were KOed by him.” Blakii replied, “Rayquaza didn’t notice the meteor until it was too late. He did destroy it, yes, but that’s what caused all of this you see around you. But you two had already sounded the alarm. His causing it to explode sent shockwaves of unimaginable power across the world. The dense forests and grassy plains were scorched into near oblivion by the intense heat. The highest mountains were partially collapsed from the force of the shockwaves. Yes, we survived, but at the cost of your lives and our planet.”
Charmander sat down quickly. His eyes wide with disbelief as tears still made their way down. He looked up at Eevee and the fox pokémon looked back with the same look. They had failed?
“But…” Charmander replied, his voice shaking as tears continued to fall, “But we stopped it. Back home, the world wasn’t changed by the meteor because we were able to stop it.”
Something suddenly dawned on Eevee. It was what Charmander had said. Back home. Back home they had saved the world from the meteor. They had been teleported up to the Sky Tower by a teleport gem made by Xatu and Alakazam. After fighting their way to the top of the summit, they tried in vain to get Rayquaza, the ancient and massive dragon lord of the skies, to destroy the meteor with its powerful hyper beam. Instead, they had to fight the legendary pokémon until it realized that they were being truthful. It took as much power as the dragon had, but the meteor was destroyed, saving their world.
“Wait a second, you’re right Charm.” Eevee said as his mind thought back to this fight, “Back home we did stop it. I think I understand it now. We’re not at all in the same world that we left.”
“What do you mean?” Charmander asked.
“Yes, tell us what your theory is.” Charizard said, “Why aren’t you dead?”
“Because in this world we are dead.” Eevee replied.
When they all looked at him with confused looks, Eevee explained, “What I mean is, I think the portal that Mewtwo, Alakazam, and Xatu created didn’t just take us somewhere else. It took us to a whole new world! Charm, this world is a parallel one to ours!”
“You mean, we’re not dead?” Charmander asked, wiping a tear from his eyes.
“The two of us are not dead.” Eevee replied, “But the Eevee and Charmander from this world, the two who would have been us, are dead! So instead of the portal working correctly, it brought us here.”
Charmander thought for a minute, and then said, “You mean we’re here for a reason?”
“Exactly!” Eevee exclaimed, and then looked to Blakii and Charizard, “But how do we know that they actually died? You said something about seeing most of what happened. What’d you mean by that?”
“We were part of the evacuation.” Blakii explained, “You two recruited us shortly after the Mount Freeze incident with Ninetails. At first, we were just that, recruits. But after proving ourselves in later rescues, you assigned us to lead a second team under Team Nexus. In other words, we were Team Nexus Delta.
“After you two had failed to stop the meteor, you realized that the only safe place was underground. So, you had me and Charizard, then Charmeleon, begin the evacuation of the teams and civilians to the caverns of the Underground Caverns where Groudon sheltered us until a few weeks after the meteor strike. It was only then that we realized what had happened.”
“We checked with everyone and couldn’t find you two.” Charizard continued, “Out of all the survivors, you two were the only ones from the town who had not made it to safety before the strike. We searched for your bodies, but never found them.
“It was only after we had emerged that we realized our world had been changed. Now, what you saw is how most of the world looks. Wastelands cover the continents, lakes and rivers have only just begun to refill from the rain, and the seas had been slightly lowered from the massive impact crater. Needless to say that both Groudon and Kyogre weren’t pleased by this.
“But then, a terrible idea was brought to light. We needed a leader. Someone who could take this wasteland and turn it back into the world it had once been. But instead of any good choice like the legendary trio of the elements, Suicune, Entei, and Raikou, or a highly intelligent leader such as Alakazam or Xatu, that wretched Gengar was chosen.”
“GENGAR!” Eevee cried, “How the hell could they choose that cowardly, wretch-?!”
“I don’t know how he did it.” Blakii admitted, interrupting Eevee, “But he came to power. At first, everything seemed to be going fine. Then, he made a swift change from a leader to a power hungry dictator. Now that tyrant is exactly what we knew you two would fear any one pokémon to become. He had grown mad with power; and his thirst for more caused civil wars to erupt all over.
“Now, Team Nexus is a rebel team. Instead of siding with him as so many teams did in the beginning, we chose to operate on our own. Now, those teams that joined him are not rescue teams any longer. We became a rebel team that fights to free our world again. But Gengar has hundreds of teams at his disposal, and now they mostly destroy lives instead of save them as teams had been intended to do in the past. Of course, his team is still the top rank. Arbok and Medichan are his two main commanders. Both of them have led ruthless teams to battle against us.”
“The fights grew worse over time.” Charizard said, “As you can tell, weapons and armor were created.” Charizard continued, “What we have is what we created. Teams Nexus and Nexus Delta were merged to bring back the team that so many knew as hope. Team Nexus is now front most in the rebellions against Gengar’s rule. Needless to say, he’d do a lot to kill us.”
“Why would the others let this happen?” Eevee asked.
“I guess because no one could fight back. So many rescue teams had already pledged allegiance to his rule that there’s little chance of a successful rebellion.” Blakii said, apparently disgusted by the thought, “We’ve won small fights, but the biggest victory we’ve had was against my rival, Kimori. We claimed victory over a large facility a few months ago. It produces armor and weapons, so it was a blow to Gengar’s arsenal. Since then, we’ve been training and growing. Almost all of us here, and in various places around the base, are capable of entering battle. Even those pokémon who usually can’t wear armor, the flying types like Pigeot and Articuno, and the water types like Gyrados and Milotic are now able to be equipped with a light armor that offers some protection from electric attacks.
“Team Nexus is willing to fight to the last one standing if we have to. Always remembering Eevee and Charmander’s brave sacrifice to save the rest of us, fighting in their name to return this world to how it was before the collision and before Gengar took over.
“All of this now leads to one question. Will you two help us to get back our world? All we need is to take out Gengar and his team and replacing them with our own system that has been working in the team for years. Two in charge, me and Charizard, with multiple others below us who would influence and direct decisions. Then, the regular pokémon can also change and have ideas that they can send us to try out.”
Eevee looked at Charmander. The two had faced impossible odds before. Some of the deepest, darkest and most sinister dungeons, caves, and mountains in their world had been conquered by the two on numerous rescue jobs. Outnumbered, out gunned, and out maneuvered, and the two still made it out in one piece. Together, it seemed that they could do anything.
But they had never done anything like this. Charmander nodded to Eevee, knowing what he was thinking. Eevee looked back at Blakii and smiled.
“We’re in.” He said, “On two conditions.”
“I don’t know. I don’t like conditions.” Blakii said.
“One’s really easy. And neither of them are anything that would put your teams in danger.” Eevee replied, “But second one’s going to be a lot harder.”
“Fine, what are the conditions?” Blakii asked.
“One is that me and Charm are always together.” Eevee said.
“Easily done.” Blakii commented.
“The second is that if we do succeed, you guys help us to get home.” Eevee said.
“Deal.” Blakii replied, shaking Eevee’s hand, “But you’ll need some training. This is going to be anything but easy.”
“When is anything easy?” Eevee asked, rolling his eyes.
“For us? Never.” Charmander replied, “Wait, was that a rhetorical question?”
Blakii smiled. He was going to like working with these two. Blakii looked up at Charizard. The dragon knew what his friend was thinking and nodded in reply. Just like their Eevee and Charmander, there was more to these two than met the eyes.
