Luna and Celestia weren’t quite close, but they always ruled together side by side. Celestia’s more brutal and selfish ruling was always balanced out by Lunas more gentle and selfless ways. One day after hearing about the terrible thing that had happened to the crystal empire the two of them went to fight off the self-proclaimed "king" Sombra. It didn’t go very well. Celestia had turned and king sombra was about to turn her into stone, when Luna sacrificed herself. She was turned almost completely into stone and Celestia had to flee, only barely getting the Luna statue with her. After painting over the statue with a nice gray-ish colour, she put it out in the royal garden. You can still see her hair in the wind, and the magic on her horn is still very active. Legend says that she uses said magic to visit people in their dreams so that she can still have contact with her people.
