You feel the warmth of a half-executed Dragon Pulse scratching in your throat, your chest, the waves of energy seeping from between your teeth. You wish you’d grabbed a lantern or something when you left; acting as a Deino torch isn’t what you signed up for, but if it gets the job done…

“I’m cold,” a quiet voice calls from behind you, and you’d sigh if it wouldn’t set half the forest on fire. Harper’s been surprisingly quiet the last hour or so – you wager it’s because he’s too spooked to speak. The night forest is pretty eerie, you’ll give him that. Not that you’re scared or anything. ‘Cause you’re not. Come on. That’s preposterous.

You don’t answer for obvious reasons and keep on treading through the shrubbery with a swagger in your step. Harper stumbles after you with significantly less grace.

“Not-not that I’m, uh, doubting your n-navigation skills,” he pipes up nervously after a moment of silence, “but, err, do you… do you know where we’re g-going?”

With a snap you shut your jaws and turn to glare at him. The light dies immediately and you breathe a sigh of relief. You don’t know how long you could’ve kept that up.

“I might be blind but I still have a pretty good sense of smell,” you inform him in a calm, slightly irritated tone of voice. “We’ve been following their trail for the last hour. Any more questions or can we go back to the rescuing?”

Harper looks mortified. He looks down at his feet, eyes glistening in the darkness(and you absolutely don’t feel a pang of guilt at that. Nope. Not at all.) “Y-yeah. I’m, I’m sorry.”

You bite your lip. “Just… come on.”

Just as you’re about to breathe the light back on, something in the bushes just to your left goes rustle and snap. Harper squeaks and you freeze. There’s something in the dark – and it does not smell like Shroomish.
