Please, don't make fun of dear Betty
And thanks, Richard. Indeed a place with a little bit of magic (at least when the light is right )

Such interesting cliffs. French counterparts to Dover?

And it WAS a nice summer morning
Counterparts of Dover, well, yes, in way. All parts of the Paris Basin in geological terms. Though this is like 150 km further south, maybe more opposing Beachy Head or Seven Sisters ...

Also, I wonder why Europe has such high straight sea cliffs and the U.S. doesn't? I haven't been to Dover or Brittany, but the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland are tall and straight too (not chalk though).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

EintoeRn In reply to RichardLeach [2010-06-16 04:56:58 +0000 UTC]

... there is considerable recent uplift of the crust in this area, this is why the cliffs develop. Origin of uplift? Not sure. Sometimes it is related to salt diapirs, but there also is a general shortening of Europe (resulting in uplift) due to to African continent pushing from the south. And this IS strong, it created all of the Alps, for instance ...

Thanks, Ulrich. Fascinating processes that work so slowly and move such vast masses. And I did not know the word "diapir", thank you for that too!

Dover is everything you would imagine. It's startling, almost, probably because there is nothing like it here in the USA.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RichardLeach In reply to LauraTringaliHolmes [2010-06-16 01:40:31 +0000 UTC]

Moher was like that. Another thing that was not like the US was that you could walk right to the edge - there was a low railing but people ignored it. We have some great pictures.

Oh dear, LA is leading Boston by 12 at the beginning of the second quarter! Game 6 of the finals with Boston up 3-2, but the game is in LA...

Wouldn't recommend to walk to the edge here, it is VERY brittle stuff ...
