At the State University free clinic, Patrick was as shocked as the nurse when the scale hit 288 lbs. It felt like such a short time ago he had graduated high school, left for college, and joined the frat; he remembered weighing 190 lbs. Now, except for a few pairs of sweatpants and t-shirts, none of his old clothes fit. In his room, he had a hamper full of deep V shirts and 28 inch waist jeans that were comically tight. Confused and a little panicked, he asked the doctor how could he have put on so much weight so fast. The docotr's reply was flat and blunt "It's probably all the pizza and beer at that frat house. We see a few freshmen put on this kind of weight every year."

The shame started to wash over him. Besides being clinically overweight, there was nothing wrong with his body. He'd done this to himself. With near endless indulging and partying, he'd destroyed his tight lean physique all on his own and in incredibly short order. He realized that, if he didn't slow down, he'd easily balloon well beyond his worst fears. It would take years to work off this blubber, if he could do it at all.
