Description This map showcases the worldbuilding for the upcoming series of Christian light novels titled Sonjo Monogatari; namely the main Samurai clans on the Kano plain.

1. While the Takayamas cant race their descent to founder of the Hanakura Bakufu, their origin was rather humble position of a jito of an estate of some noble, name of which was long lost to history. Most important part of the family’s history however, started with the Takayama no Katsuyori, who gained fame as a military commander in service of the Hanakura branch of the Asano shoguns. After end of the war, Katsuyori killed the deputy Shogun and married his daughter, claiming the office for himself; which the Shogunate in the capital recognised. Subsequently he conquered a vast area (4,7,6), and defeated the Suda clan in the battle of Inugahara.

His son, Murakami no Katsuyoshi, was in no manner match for his father. During his time, Ishu rebelled with the aid of Sanada clan, resulting in a disastrous loss of the province. Later, his vassals in Kishu were overthrown by the Lotus Sutra League.

2. Suda clan is descended from ancien Tataras, who settled there with the army of the Asano shoguns. During the Kano wars the Sudas backed the Hanakura branch, albeit without extreme devotion.

3. Toki clan was put in charge of Koshu relatively recently, upon Suda conquest of the province. They are a caded branch of the Sudas.

4. Ishu is ruled by a triumvirate of Ukita, Mizuryu and Ichijo clans; with the Mizuryu clan holding the title of Shugo. The Mizuryu were originally Katsuyori’s vassals who rebelled after Katsuyori abused one of the family’s daughters, meant to be married to the Ukita heir. Since that time, the triumvirate are the sworn enemies of the Takayama clan. All three clans have local origin.

5. Sanada clan of Esshu can not brag about a noble origin; it’s founder was a mere Ashigaru, who manager to climb his way up and overthrow the Hiki clan that prieviously ruled the area. Upon the patriarch’s death, there was a brief period of infnighting that ended with Sanada Harumune assuming power and executing all his brothers.

6. Ise clan of Inshu were originally local Jito. At the beginning, they were only one of many warlords in the area, and nominally answered to the Yuki clan of Taishu – until Ise Ujiteru sided with Takayama Katsuyori during his conquest of the area. Despite weakening of the Murakami power, Ise clan manager to keep positive ties with the Takayamas; as the neighbouring powers are not their greatest friends.

7. Kishu was once a fiefdom of the Takayams; but recently a peasant revolt led by a Nichiren Buddhist temple led to Chiba clan being ousted from power. The rebels established a peasant republic and openly defy the Takayama authority.

8. Yuki clan of Taishu are descended from the ancien Fujikawas; and through them from the Emperors of Wenchuan. The family used to rule the entire Northern Nifon before the rise of the Murakami Shoguns; but has been as of now reduced to a single province.

9. Yanagisawa clan of Banshu are a cadet branch of the Hanakura line of the Asano shoguns, which was supposed to take over if the main line went extinct. The Takayama usurpation prevented that from happening – a fact that the Yanagisawa clan never forgave. Now allied with the Sanadas, they seek to regain what is once their.

IDEAS:

- Yanagisawa clan allied with Sanada Harumune and helped him rise to power – creating a man who will become for a while the regional hegemon. How will Yanagisawa clan feel about being relegated to a secondary role in the alliance, despite their formally higher position in the feudal hierarchy?

- Suda and Takayama clan are both seeing the threat of the Sanada Hegemony – yet their relations are tainted by the memory of battle of Inugahara, where Takayama no Katsuyori slaughtered ten thousand Suda prisoners of war.
